Word. Was there a year that the sensors came stock on the fishbones? I seen to recall the sensor starting on the G90 or something, and the all 80s starting on the beemer. If you swapped the sensors on, then maybe you have some advice for me. I was considering mounting sprungs, but I have no idea how the Kevlar outsole will react and I don't wanna wreck these as I'm not really counting on finding another pair in this lifetime

That’s a long time for me to remember, but I remember seeing Fishbones, 962’s, G80’s and G90’s coming with a mix of the Redline hi-Lo frames and the sensor frames.

Been a long time, and I know a lot of folks didn't like these, but these were my favorite skates back in the day. Saw a pair in my size and grabbed em for outdoor skates. Brand new, still with og Millennium wheels lol

These with the sensor chassis were some of my favorite skates. Probably the best Tour skate of all time.

  3. I’ve had the EZ Goal since, 2005’ish maybe 2006. Still going strong, it’s survived every Boston winter since. Never stored it inside, its been in a driveway since I got it. Honestly never folded it up so I can’t speak on that. Only ‘maintenance’ I’ve done is new netting a few times. Well worth the investment if you ask me.

Also congrats on the house! Can only imagine the hoops you had to jump through to find a house in the Boston Metro market, real estate is bananaland right now around here.

What am I looking for to know that’s fake? Not doubting you, just trying to learn for myself.

The name bar looks like its a sticker or was just put on a retail bauer stick. No flex, build code, or version of Eichel's stick.

My question is, without the name bar how do you know its fake?

I though the toe clip was a gimmick as well.  However, you absolutely needed it with that skate.  I finally retired (trashed) my pair after 15 years cause the toe clip broke, and once it does that you essentially lost the first few lower eyelets of the skate.  Wasn't the toe clip called something like the "power clip"?  I had the Micron 10-90.  Was a great skate, gimmick or no gimmick.

Yea the Micron clip was the 'Power Clip.' With the Microns or Mega's that I had I always thought it was the cut of the boot, the angle of the eyelets, & depth that made them stand out. I remember a buddy who played in the OHL was still able to get custom skates from Bauer that were 'Mega' builds up until 99 or maybe 2000.

So the 5030 mailbox is complete! It's a bit over the top, but we are in a very rural area , and it's located in area where it's surrounded by trees. It kind of sneaks up on you when driving.  There is about 2 feet in the ground set in concrete to prevent kids like me when I was 18 or so from walking off with it.

What curve did you decide to use on that badboy?

In all seriousness I would 100% buy one of those, looks awesome!

  7. Invest in multiple sets of steel, go to your spot once every few months and you’re golden.

Avoid chain stores like the plague, or the ‘rona, the norm is a shitty sharpening from a kid who doesn’t have a clue.

Outside of justifying this because I’m a gear whore, if part of my enjoyment of being on the ice is directly correlated to my comfort & confidence from a skate sharpening, then so be it I’m only taking my skates to my guy and getting them done right.

I always picture a "pro bag" as a huge duffle with everything just dumped in it... no fancy pockets, dividers, mesh or venting.

The JRZ bags are exactly what comes to mind.

Agreed, although I have bags within the bag...helmet bag, laundry bag, shower bag, steel holder (kind of a bag), Tape bag.

  9. Interesting topic & discussion, just want to drop 2 anecdotes I've encountered over my years and how they relate:

Years back I was dealing with some awful hip pain that lead me to an orthopedist by the name of Brian Busconi, you know you're in the right spot when your doctor has a HockeyDB page and a Harvard Hockey Jersey in his office, notta big deal. After we got done with the pleasantries of going with PT instead of any surgery he actually asked me about what brand and model skate I was using. The interesting thing about that question is I was only 6 months or so out from making the switch from a pair of pro stock Bauer 1000 old school leather skates to the recently released Bauer APX skates. The doc said the first thing I wanted to do was go back and find another pair of Bauer 1000s or at the very least buy one of the lower end pairs of Bauers that would not be as stiff as the APX I was using. He began discussing all of the negatives that go along with the stiffness of the newly designed skates and how he sees younger and younger players with Knee, hip, & ankle issues. Long story short, went out and found some pro-stock tech mesh vapors and after making that switch and some PT, no more hip pain.

Another tangential topic that I think applies here is a chat I had was with Wayne up at Zwickers once upon a time. I think we were talking about the work he used to do for Paul Coffey and then somehow started talking about Kevin Lowe and how he used the 2-piece hinged Microns and Bauer plastic boots forever. Wayne said there was an internal battle at Bauer about continuing the R&D on those 2-piece boots and although all of their research showed them to perform better they just didn't sell and that was the end of them.

I did the debate for mine but couldn’t bring myself to drill more holes in my boots, so I stuck it out and love them.  288 holder, Quad 1.  What Ellipse profile on what size did you end up with?  Ellipse 1 made me feel like I was waterskiing.

I went from a 272 Tuuk with a Quad 0 to the Shift 263 and the Quad 0, but it felt so short & choppy at the toe/front of the blade. Made the switch to an Elipsys 0, much more stable and smoother. Took a little getting used to in transitions, in terms of pivoting from backwards to chasing pucks in deep but other than that realized with this profile I wouldn't need to go the holder swap router.

  11. I guess I'm the only one who stuck it out with the Shift holders and actually likes them. At first I did have trouble with feeling comfortable on the shift holder as they were shorter than the Tuuks. It wasn't until I changed the profile to the Elipsys that I really felt a difference and comfortable, the Quad profile just felt too short on the shift holder.

Labeda gripper yellow are 80a and would probably work well for you. Konixx Pure +1 is officially 76a. Smooth concrete outdoor rinks tend to be super dusty usually, which plays a big part in the sliding out. Ime there is no wheel that prevents that. We used to rub the wheels down with alcohol which helps them grip a bit, but you have to do it every few shifts really.

ha, I remember using that Sonic grip juice spray like crazy on wheels trying to get better grip on smooth concrete, I'm not sure if it helped or not.
