Tip for washing your gear

Recommended Posts

I was standing around with some hockey parents and the subject of washing hockey gear came up. I complained that when I put my stuff in the washing machine most of it floats and everythign ends up tangled in the velcro straps.

One mom said that she washes her sons stuff in the dish washer. She said shes been doing it since he was in Mites and never had any issues with damage. She said she uses regular dishwasher soap.

Obviously you're not gonna want to put your skates in there but shins, elbows and shoulders should be fine.

Sani Sport....costs betwen 20-40 ucks depending where you are...but I had it done and it worked great.

As far as doing it at home...I've heard of people throwing it in the pool....then drying it on the deck...Obviously not an option for Canadian Winter hockey...but great for Summer leagues.

Do you think it would damage your gloves if you put them in the dish washer?

Cause my gloves stink so bad . I have never found out a good way to wash my gloves

Guest Marcelo Cordoba

Find someone like Jimmy who has a SaniSport machine. Any other "cleaning" system will ruin your gear IMHO.

Washing machines/dishwashers can actually promote the growth of bacteria. Use SaniSport. If you need a quick fix, find some wintergreen rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide, mix equal parts in a spray bottle, spray on generously, let dry.

LOL good question.

I havn't done it with my new, good equipment, but that what I did with my older gear. Just set it on the clean ground and spray.

Yeah, but it really works, and doesn't cost much. Just don't do it to brand new equipment until you test it on older gear.

Isn't dishwasher water super-hot? In other words, isn't there the potential of damaging the equipment?

As a somewhat recent convert to the sani sport type machines..its interesting to see how we as hockey players, will spend 200 on a stick, 400 on skates, 200 on gloves..but get "cheap" when it comes to taking care of them..me..i'm still "cheap" but I wait for some sales at the cleaning places and get it done once or twice a year...of course..my gear still isn't allowed inside the apt...but that's a whole other story

I think Marcelo's point is just because its come out of the dishwasher, tub, washing machine and isn't ruined..doesn't mean its done its job...you can febreeze stuff to mask odor..but if getting rid of bacteria, etc was that easy..we'd use some of those spray bottles to clean our normal clothes....

What about the Helmet? Can that be placed in the dishwasher? Is there a cold or warm setting on dishwashers? (I'm asking for a friend who asked me today, I don't own a dishwasher) I'd think if put in a warm to cold cycle, it'd be okay, again, taking it out before the dry cycle, and using maybe a mild detergent. Helmet is a 452 with the white foam liner.

Friend huh?..

After every game I take a cloth and soap ... quick pass inside the helmet then rinse cloth and remove soap.

I suspect "the" helmet hasn't been cleaned in a while ... use a small brush with soap, then go back to cloth to remove soap.
