Here's a silly question: where did you find out?

Edit: nevermind, i just saw the firing on sportsnet.ca front page. Press conf. called for 1 pm ET. Hey, weren't you an hour off with the Steve Moore press conf. too, D3nZ? ;)

Well they changed the time for that one, I was off for the Steve Moore conference that's cause I had the time for the Maritimes, but it for this one it was changed.

EDIT: Look on the TSN.com web page right now, it says 2h ET.

Perry Pearn (another assistant coach) won't be a candidate for the Head Coach job, but he still remains with the Senators.

I'm not so much surprised by this annoucement as I am by how sudden it seems.

Yeah, I did feel a move coming. It just felt a bit shocking because it hits geographically close to home rather suddenly.

I'm not sure why Perry Pearn was the only assistant coach kept though.

Because he was still on contract and they asked him if he wanted to step aside because of the changes and he said no. I am surprised tha Mockler is still there though, he should have been fired too I think, all the moves he made so far weren't the best so.

I disagree, the DeVries and Bondra deals cost very little and he didn't sell off talent to get them. The only thing you can fault him for is not getting a better goalie. Honestly, who was available?

I think it's about time they got rid of Martin. He did bond them well, like Theo said, but come playoff time they just seemed to slowly dissappear.

Martin did a great job of helping shape that team. I would have like to seen him stay longer to finish what he started. It's too bad that he couldn't shift gears for the playoffs though. He shouldn't be out of work long with his resume.

Maybe it's time for a new TV reality game show, "Canadian Hockey Coach" where contestants audition for the job of Sens head coach. ;) That said, it'll be interesting to see who the candidates will be.

I don't like the acquistion of De Vries because I think the Sens are on the hook for the rest of his contract (he's only in the first year of a mult year deal). I consider him to be overpaid for what he has put out.

Bondra is okay in my book for what they paid, I think the Sens can walk away from next years option (so the Sens didn't really pay too much for his services) ?

For Goaltending, Kolzig was available but I think the asking price was probably too high so I can't fault Muckler for passing on him.

I don't disagree, but I think DeVries may have been a little pricy money wise. Also paying Ray to be his friend and hang out in the press box wouldn't of sit well with me If I was Melnik.

DeVries may be overpaid but you have to take risks to get rewards. It really didn't cost them anything to get him and the additional salary was approved by ownership. I wouldn't be surprised to see him somewhere else in a couple of years, but everyone was laoding up for this year and it's not like they killed the future.

i agree with you on that, no risk no reward. The only thing I would of did different was to go after a defenceman with an attitude, someone like a 'Wade Belak' type player. Tough and stir it up. De Vries was too laid back.

That, and de Vries is used to a more open style of hockey with the Avalanche and Rangers. Coming to Ottawa at trade deadline gave him little time to get acclimated with their more conservative style. If things opened up, de Vries might yet do well with the Sens.

I don't know....De Vries was not afraid to stir things up if needed in NY...He had a few fights. And I definitely think he is a better player then Belak.

that's what I thought of De Vries before he came to Ottawa. I thought he was a pretty good player when he was with the Avs. Some how I had this feeling he wouldn't fit in with the Sens when I heard he got traded at the trade deadline.

Regarding Belak, I don't doubt that De Vries is a better player but I made that statement under the assumption that the Sens only needed a tough defenceman to play 5-8 minutes a game. Chara and Redden would log the majority of the minutes. Also, a player of Belak's stature should come much cheaper than De Vries in my opinion.

Lightning head coach John Tortorella's(sp?) reaction to Martin's firing was that it's a BS excuse for not holding the players accountable. I'll try finding a link to it if someone posts one later on.

Martin has had, what 6 years?? I think he has had long enough to get that team going. He refuses to make adjustments in the playoffs when things are not working. Everyteam has to make adjustments to win, I think his unwillingness to do so makes him expendable.

Now the Ottawa management figures out the team has no heart though? I wouldn't mind the Devils getting Martin while Burns is out, even if he coached a pissant team for all these years.
