digital cameras

Recommended Posts

i'm in the market here for a digital camera, and just had a concern or two. is there a major difference in quality between 3.0MP and 4.0MP? there's quite a hefty price difference between the two around here, and i was wondering if it's worth the extra money to go for the 4.0+, or if 3.0 would be sufficient

I too am in the market. I got the following advice: (this is copied from what I was told - I'm ignorant on such matters):

Here are a few recommendations - I have a Canon PowerShot SD - for taking anywhere its tiny - but still takes good images and movies - I also have an Olympus for bigger zoom range, tripod work- its not as portable - but has a better low light lens.  One of the biggest features the canon cameras have is the lag between when you push the shutter and the picture actually takes -on all digitals there is a delay- on the canon its very small.  Also the time its takes for the Camera to "warm up" , from being off -  to where its ready to shoot -the canon is quick-some cameras it can be as long as 10 seconds, which doesnt seem like much but it is--

I use this web site as a reference, they really test the cameras and as far as I can tell dont have a bias towards any manufacturer.  Just good reviews and the most current info.

My top 3 recommendations are:

Canon PowerShot SD300 - Ultra Compact - Metal Case - Rechargable Battery

Canon PowerShot A95 - Medium Sized - Value

Olympus C-770 Ultra Zoom - Big Zoom - Bigger Camera

Dont get too caught up in the megapixel thing, anything with 3 meg will get you great 8x10 pics printed, anything more then 5 would be overkill especially if you only want 4x6 or 5x7 pics.  Also ignore digital zoom, its crap.  Optical zoom of at least 3x is what you need.

BASED ON THAT: I checked out the following items (but have not yet taken the plunge personally)

Z2http://reviews-zdnet.com.com/Konica_Minolta_Dimage_Z2/4505-6501_16-30732522.html?tag=lst

There was some nice hand held in the A series from Canon (Power Shots).

Check out www.jandrmusic.com if you're going to buy on the net. I've used them a ton, and recommend them highly. Good prices (they'll match if you call), and good service.

Here is hw the Digital Camera experience has been explained to me...

If you are replaceng a cheap (re: inexpensive) point and shoot film camera, and you only intend to do 4x6 prints or you are taking pictures for a (non professional) website...3MP is fine. But, if you plan on having shots blown up to 5x7 or 8x10...and you are replacing a decent quality film camera, then go higher MP.

Also, Optical zoom is more important than Digital zoom.

And you should buy a digital camera made by a camera company...not a computer company. I've heard good things about HP cameras, but a Nikon/Canon/Fuji will have better "camera" parts. Apparantly higher end Sony cameras use Nikon (correct me if I'm wrong) lens, so they are very good.

My GF has a FujiFilm 3.1 MP with no Optical Zoom, and a 2 Digital (if memory serves)....I have a 3.2 Fuji Film with 3X Optical 2X digital Zoom, and you can see difference in picture quality.

Bottom line, spend whatever you are comfortable with for the uses you have in mind.

I got a canon g5 or something, i love this thing.

It has everything you need.

Good battery support, nice resolution, zoom and so on.

Check Google if you need some more informations.

Radiogaga- High end sony cameras use a carl-zeiss lens, it's sony's own thing that they've been doing forever, but there's a good chance that Nikon's been using it for just as long.

As far as cameras, there's really no reason not to go with 4mp at this point, the prices are dirt cheap (a good nikon or fujifilm can be had for under 200) and the picture quality is great. What is annoying, though, is that unless you go with a slightly bulky camera, you're looking at 3-4x optical zoom tops--no matter what MP you get.

Also, I'd avoid casio. For some reason their cameras just don't take really nice pictures.

I recommend you check out www.dpreview.com Its a pretty detailed site, but its really good at comparing the different features offered and allows you to view sample pictures from different cameras.
