For shop owners, how much do you usually charge for rivets and labor? Mine were done for $45, does that sound about right?"

It depends. If it's something stupid like 20+ rivets each on t'blades I charge per rivet. Otherwise I charge about $30.

I also got sharpening and waxed laces, so thats -$9. So i guess it was $36,So I guess that was reasonable according to you chadd

I consider sharpening to be part of the process, Why would you mount them and not sharpen them?

well,i forgot that i get my skates sharpened for free there any way.I dont know why he charged that much,well all shops charge different amounts so thats probally what he thought was the best price.

$30 for a straight swap (works out to $1 for steel, $1.50 for copper)

$40 if I have to drill holes.

You put 20 rivets in when you do a t'blade swap?

I don't do t'blade swaps for the most part. There are only a handful of users around here and they use them because they came on their skates. Considering the reputation I have for sharpening in this area, very few of my customers want or feel they need t'blades. Once I explain the benefits of traditional sharpening and the benefits of t'blades, customers always go with a traditional sharpening. If the Pitch holders we ordered as part of our booking ever show up, I know I will sell a lot more of those than I would t'blades.

I also don't like a product that takes a talent like sharpening and turns it into a commodity. Considering the shops around here that sell t'blades are terrible at sharpening skates, I can see why their customers think it's a major improvement.

Understandable.

I had done a lot of t'blade swaps and they all went back. It was more experimentation on their part on anything.

So...I'm guessing you changed your mind?

I was planning to blow some out online but I haven't heard anything from that vendor in a while. He was supposed to send me 5 pair for a customer a month ago and no word on them yet. I'm getting really fed up with his company right now.

Considering the shops around here that sell t'blades are terrible at sharpening skates, I can see why their customers think it's a major improvement.

I bought my t'blades from a place that is very well known in Toronto to do a very good job at sharpening; they thought pretty highly of the things and told me that they had had very few people switch back. For me, the time I was spending driving out there and back (and it's only a 10-15-minute drive each way) to get the sharpenings done, not to mention the headaches involved in negotiating car access with my wife, all became prohibitive. I figured if the t'blades hold their edges twice as long as my old steel, I'd be ahead once you factor in my lost time.

On a purely performance basis, I'm not sure whether I like them, I turn much faster but seem to have lost speed, but the convenience factor is huge and they do seem to stay pretty sharp. I might have to try a flatter rocker.

I've done about 15 swaps to date. Every one of them came back after a while wanting their conventional blades put back on. One stayed with it, but then bought new skates.

Like I've said before, it is good if you don't have anyone who can sharpen well by you.

I just got my skates done for $25 which seems like a pretty good deal because the guy had to drill a hole threw the new chassis to attach it and had to drill all new holes in my skates. It might have been cheaper because it was on my inlines. Does that make any difference?

Kovy - I brought my riveter from home up on the trip. I'll have two in the store. I start the 11th.

Trucks - as long as he did it right, no problem.

It's funny though when people talk about riveting prices. I listed what I charged when it was my own gig - but with that you got a guarantee that it was done right - and I replaced popped rivets (and rusted rivets, within reason) for free. Some kid at RDV went to a roller rink in town and got it done for $15. Came back and asked me to sharpen them - I told him that I wouldn't do it. He asked me why, and the reason was because the guy mounted a set of 280 Tuuk LS onto a size 11 boot.

He sounds like a bit of a fool JR what size would 280 fit then?

JR, when i got the tuuks put on my synergys i noticed that the rivets arent setting on the holder flush, the holders dont move or anything ,but will this be a problem when i go to skate on them.

I did a pair of SyNergys and the problem is, one, you need small rivets. Two, it doesn't sink into the insole as well. Unfortunately, the best way is to use coppers if you want a secure mount.

Is copper alot better of something because you always see 2 copper rivets at the back of the holder i thought steel was stronger or is it some other reason?

Hey, just a question:

You (experienced) guys always say, that a boot has to be drilled if you want a certain holder. Why dont you drill holes into the new holder to line up with the holes in the skate?
