Best way to take care of your glove's palms

Recommended Posts

I've just bought a pair of eagle X70 gloves, i'm from Argentina, and with the shipping, the custom, and the currency exchange it cost me too much, so i like to take care of the gloves. I think i'll re-tape my stick, i have renfrew tape.

Is this a good hockey tape??

I have it in black, but i'm thinking of buying a roll of white tape (i think this will tear less the palms, because the black tape tear my last gloves).

Any comments will help, thanks!!!!!!!

white tape is said to be better for palms as the black seems to be rougher in texture....but really, its how you handle the stick, i find that having a smaller butt end cuts down on the friction, ie. smaller knob at the end rather than a hulking tennis ball

Sprinkle some baby powder/talcum(sp) powder if the palm gets sticky from tape. I just did this to some Cooper gloves that had quickly gotten tacky from the tape. It worked great. I prefer black cloth over white cloth. There can be more adhesive on white tape than black. My palms were Dura-soft synthetic, not leather. If you have leather buy Lexol leather conditioner. You can use that on any leather part of your glove although there isn't too much leather in gloves these days!

The way you hold your stick will also have an impact on your palms. I find that if my little finger hangs over the end of the stick, my palm wears out faster. Since it is hard to change how I hold my stick, I tried making a knob using electrical tape. The only problem with that was the complete absence of grip. Currently, I use white tape and wear the hell out of my left palm. If you don't mind losing all grip, give electrical tape a try.

Use only white tape..A little baby powder will help...

MAKE SURE YOU TAKE YOUR GLOVES OUT OF YOUR BAG!!!!! Most people do not air out the stuff and that causes huges problems....

On top of that, make sure you air out the gloves in a cool room where they can dry slowly. A hot, dry area will stiffen the palms.

About the lanolin: as Justin points out, that only works if your palms are leather.

I just shook the powder on the butt end, not the glove. I made sure all sides were covered with the powder. Then I just put the glove on and grabbed the butt end to rub it in.

Air drying is not good enough. You must get cool air to the fingers. Use a hair dryer on cool or a Dry-Guy on cool.

Use a taci-mac instead of tape on the butt.

I did it once and used the gloves 6 times since with no need to do it again. The palm didn't get tacky again. The stickiness from the tape on the butt end was gone.+
