New Golf Irons

Recommended Posts

Ok, Im a so so golfer, useually around 80-90's. For the past year Ive had ping g2 knockoffs wich were ok, I wasnt to crazy about the middle-short irons. I recently traded my old wilson cavity backs for some wilson blue ridge blades. I really like how the 5-pw hit. I feel I can controll them much better and get a lot more spin. The problem is there kinda old and are cut down were there too short for a 6 foot guy. Its not worth it to get them reshafted and re gripped. So, Im asking for advice into a good set of blades or combo irons. Id like to go the knock off route to save a ton of money. Thanks

I really like my blades tho, I mean i hit them really well. Its just the long irons are a little harder to hit sometimes thats why i was thinking of a combo set( short irons are blades, middle irons are muscle backs, and long irons are cavity backs)

I use Armor Evo forged blades, fantastic clubs. I sacrifice a little distance but the feel is fantastic. I carry a cavity back 4 ironthat I built as it's a little more forgiving.

Unless you're a damn good golfer, I say go with the combo set. I'm a 4 handicap right now, and I have a bitch of a time trying to hit my uncle's blade long-irons whenever he and I go to the range...

I picked up a set of titleist 690.MB at the beginning of the summer. The thing with blades is that you need a consistent, solid swing every time you hit the ball. The sweet spot is very slight, but there are few things that feel better when your stripe one with them.

Absolutely. My set for the last 2 years before my 690s were Cally X-16 pro series. With those I had a problem getting the ball anywhere but sky high and dead straight as my game really started to progress. With the blades I can hit high fades/draws at will. My short irons have a much lower, penetrating ball flight yet I'm still able to land them soft.

You could go with Ping G5's, newest line from Ping. As long as you liked your G2 knockoffs (I wasn't aware they even made G2 knockoffs) I'm sure you'll like them. Decently cheap too.

As for blades, I love mine, but they just aren't for everyone. As Cavs said you need consistency but once you get that, it feels like you're hitting with a pillow on your club. So soft and easy to shape shots with.

Well I went to the range today to get a better feel for the wilson blades. The only clubs that were giveing me any consistant trouble were the 3 and 4 iron. Some shots ok some not so ok. The 5,6,7,8 ect. were great. I know this may seem odd but with my with my mid irons(567) i feel like the ball gets up easier and lands softer, as for the short irons(89pw) there about the same, maybe a lil more spin and softer landing. Fading and Drawing wasnt much trouble. Overall I just feel more consistant with the 5-pw. I was looking at some clubs at the 2nd swing yesterday and am thinking about selling my wilson's(too short) and getting ether older cleveland TA1's blades, older mizuno blades, or nike pro combo clones. Any thoughts on these irons?, or suggestions for others?

PS sherwood, G5's?? Havent heard of them yet.

Yea G5's are the newest line (and i5's) from Ping. My coach told me about them (he's sponsored by Ping) and with my ho'ing of most clubs I'm bound to get i5's soon. What I would do in your situation (if you have the money) is get the mizuno blades, 5-PW and then buy a 3 and 4 G2 or G5 HL.

That crossed my mind too. What do you guys think of those 3-4 iron replacements like the halo, rescue, nike, ect? I hit the nike once and it was pretty nice. But im trying to stay under 250 for irons(used and %20 off at my 2nd swing).

I got a TM rescue club knock off when they first came out and I couldn't hit it to save my life. I actually hit my 4 iron better than the hybrids.

twiztidwrista10 post a pic of these blades, it would be interesting to see..

hybrids arent for everyone.. its like sushi, an acquired taste for long time golfers.

however, unless you can drive your ball over 250 yards, it will be a challenge to hit your 3 iron, as you wont get enough club head speed, and with it's lower loft, you usually, hit it less than your 5 iron.

in this case, get a 7 wood / 9 wood or the hybrid if you cant get used to it

also, make sure you get properly fitted for the clubs, makes a huge difference

i got 10 years experience in club building and i have seen it all...

people going to major golf store chains, drop $1000+ and getting "fitted" buy an idiot, who is in it for the commision, selling you what ever they have in stock.

not to say all of them are bad, but you need to fitted by an experienced guy, so that when you go to the chain store, you know what you need, instead of letting the guy try and figure it out in 10 minutes.

2 of my recent customers had this happen, they got "fitted" for regular shafts, and when i fitted them, they were X-stiff. the guy instally droped 15 strokes.
