Chadd, i'd like your opinion on Kanye's rant. Do you think he is telling the truth or just saying bullshit about Bush?

Personally i find some of it to be true, (ie/ looting)

I think it's BS. The whole "looting -vs - finding" thing has been exposed at total BS in virtually every case. There was a very heated discussion about this in Fark a couple days ago and the news agencies involved actually had the explanations from the people who took the photos. Without the firsthand knowledge of what happened everything is just an assumption.

I don't care what color you are, stealing food from a grocery store in this type of situation is understandble. Stealing TVs, computers and jewelry is not acceptable.

As for his second statement, I believe it is incorrect as well. It should have been "George bush doesn't care about POOR people." It may have had more impact if he didn't sound like a 6 year old trying to come up with an excuse for breaking something.

Saw the front page from the paper from today or yesterday. It was a old black guy with his arms out saying something to a soldier and the headline was "What took you?"

Pretty much sums up how I feel about this situation.

I didn't see Kanye's performance, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was a well timed publicity stunt that coincides with his new album coming out (which is really good).

Do a search for it on one of the file sharing programs, I found a copy of it on Limewire. While I wasn't impressed by the timing or the tone of his comments, I believe it reflected his beliefs and genuinely came from his heart.

kanye basically had good intentions during his interview, he wanted to help the people hurt by katrina, he just shouldn't have said anything about black people. it's not right to take the victims of a natural disaster (that is neither controlled by the government nor selects it's victims based on race) and use it to slander the president of the united states for racism.

That is a great point Chadd. Thats exactly how I feel about looting. If you need to get water food etc. then I dont think it should be a crime. Its not like they have all they need in the superdome etc. But stealing electronics and other things that wont help in the situation shouldnt be acceptable.

If one's intention is to spur dialogue, then I disagree you.

As a card carrying member of the white race of America, I think we sometimes underestimate the level of anger/hatred/resentment/envy that pockets of the world have toward us. For all we know, Bush has a number of black buddies, so it's entirely possible that Kanye is misinformed. But I think it's important for the rest of us to realize that Kanye is probably far from alone in thinking they're cornered.

I dont think Bush had anything to do with it but the media did. When it shows a white family with food with a headline like helping or saving etc. then a black family with food with a headline saying looting. I think that is what Kanye was trying to point out.

EDIT- I was trying to say something like this...

"Black people loot, white people find?" was the headline on boingboing.net, one of several Web sites reporting the differences in wording.

"The images were shot by different photographers, and captioned by different photo wire services," as the boingboing writer noted. "The Associated Press caption accompanying the image with a black person says he's just finished 'looting' a grocery store. The AFP/Getty Images caption describes lighter skinned people 'finding' bread and soda from a grocery store. No stores are open to sell these goods."

EDIT EDIT- Media Example

The interviews with the photographers showed that those captions were correct, given what they actually saw in those situations. I love when some people in the media try to create additional racial problems in this country. We have enough real problems without looking for reasons to hate each other.

Jack Stokes, AP's director of media relations, confirmed today that [photographer Dave] Martin says he witnessed the people in his images looting a grocery store. "He saw the person go into the shop and take the goods," Stokes said, "and that's why he wrote 'looting' in the caption."
The photographer who took the Getty/AFP picture, Chris Graythen, also posted the reasons behind his caption:

I wrote the caption about the two people who 'found' the items. I believed in my opinion, that they did simply find them, and not 'looted' them in the definition of the word. The people were swimming in chest deep water, and there were other people in the water, both white and black. I looked for the best picture. there were a million items floating in the water — we were right near a grocery store that had 5+ feet of water in it. it had no doors. the water was moving, and the stuff was floating away. These people were not ducking into a store and busting down windows to get electronics. They picked up bread and cokes that were floating in the water. They would have floated away anyhow.

He should have been ranting about Chertoff and Brown... I dont understand how Michael Brown didn't resign or wasn't asked to resign after the hurricane he overpayed over 10 million (I think) to a city that the hurricane didnt even hit. (I think it was hurricane Frances)
