Theo Fleury

Recommended Posts

Yeah, this one between Belfast, Fleury and the Balze fans has history. I was at the first meeting this season between the two when things kicked off. Coventry fans are a bit new to the hockey world, a lot of them come in with the mentality that if they aren't in the cov shirt they are scum and deserve a tough night. To a point its ok, but i just ahd to shake my head at that game. They spent the whole night taunting him along the lines of "why aren't you in the NHL" kinda thing... overlooking the fact that any other player never has or had a chance of playing NHL hockey, but also the fact that Fleury played at such a high standard.

Its pretty widly known that Mr Fleury has a wee history with drink and drugs, so what was hilarious to the cov fans really pissed off Fleury and the Belfast team, and to be fair the Blaze organisation. A couple of idiots ordered a few pints and delivered them to Fleury on the bench during play!!

Thats when everything hit the fan and Fleury lost it, was ejected, had to be escorted to the locker room (for the safety of the fans who brought the drinks).

Fleury then got a bashing in the print media and on a few UK hockey forums from the Coventry fans for not being classy and refusing to sign autographs.

Looks like the latest installment was pretty interesting too..

I wasn't at the latest game in question so here is a flavour from another board. I have to point out that you've got to allow for some creative license on his behalf, but it wouldn't surprise me if these were pretty acurate- creative bunch in Cov!

Just to pass on-and these were comments heard by me from down in front of Blocks 1 and 2 (i.e the opposite side to the benches)-minus swearing-should the mods wish to delete them then fair enough, but given the amount of requests from both sides to hear what was said, I thought I´d put a few.

All were shouted when Theo was nearby and play had been stopped, the first before he`d even touched the puck or the heckling had begun on the other side.

"Get back into rehab, you useless smack-head"

"The only line you like to be on is up your nose"

"Does anyone fancy a pint? He does..." (shouted at full volume as Theo settled in for a face-off)

"Stop sniffing, Theo...and don´t get upset, either"

"What are you on THIS time, Theo?"

I have a feeling it was these, and comments like them, not the much-cited "chocolate teapot" or any of the banter from 13 and 14 reference, that contributed the most to his angry behaviour...

Idiots. It's not soccer it's hockey. Theo doesn't deserve that shit, and with all due respect to 'facing adversity' those fans thought they owned the building. They probably couldn't face Theo in reality and said it behind those bars that Theo couldn't get through. Poor Theo. On another note, does Steve Downie remind any of you of Theo?

People under 5 foot 8 have no place in the NHL, your going to get creamed, no offecnce. I know that they cant help there size. Maybe the Euro league is better for him and he size??

Just a thought.

Small guys don't have a place in the NHL? What are you talking about? Fleury could still be playing in the NHL if he had not messed with drugs and had problems with alcohol.

Whoaaaaaaaa....calm down. I have nothing against small players. I'm just saying his career wouldn't have been as great as it could have been had he was bigger. The Euro league, he will most likely tear up.

The guy scored over 50 goals in an NHL season...he's small, but he's already been very successful in the NHL. Martin St. Louis won the scoring title in the last NHL season (not to mention a Stanley Cup). There are hundreds of small guys that have been successful in the NHL over the years. Sure it's easier if you're a big guy, but the truly talented can succeed regardless of their size.

All I'm saying is that he had a great career in the NHL. Small guys learn to use different skills than the bigger players. If Fleury had been 6-3, 210lbs, he would have developed a different set of skills. He probably would have ended up as a third line checking type of player. Bottom line small guys can do well in the NHL, sometimes they just have to work harder.

if you are talking about small guys in the nhl... think about martin st.louis... he has had quite the decent past 3 seasons... even though this season isn't as good as his past, but Theo was a pretty big force back in the old calgary flames days.

Theo Fleury in no way tears up the EIHL FAR FROM IT

he gets beat on nearly every shift, the EIHL is better than what alot of you people think.

Fleury had over 1000 pts in his NHL career.

His skills and desire to compete should never be questioned

What about his penalty minutes, and crimal record?

In fairness, although I've not seen Fleury play this year, is he not leading the EIHL in scoring, despite playing quite a few less games than everybody else? Averaging more than two points a game?

He may be past his best, but if that's not "lighting it up", I don't know what is!

my god look at his penalty minutes! :o 217 in just 36 games! you know those penalty mins are for stupid things as well. i think this guy is hurting his team more then helping them and how can you call theo "the man"? he is more a dumbass then a badass. who in their right mind would fire a puck at the refs head.

i highly doubt he is more detremental than help, he has so much skill, and the fans (apart from coventry) have appreciated him for his game, not the drink or the drugs.
