OHL Draft

Recommended Posts

I wasn't drafted, never was really good enough to even have a shot. I knew about 8 or 9 kids who went my year and maybe 3 or 4 the year after. Some high picks some later rounders. One in the OHL right now. Couple more from the Hammer who I know of through friends are in the OHL as well. The guy I know who's made it to the OHL has been really close for the last 10 or 12 years, we train together a fair bit in summer.

10th Overall : Matt Layhe. He goes to my school, I am friends with his best friend. Glad to see him go to Ottawa, I think under Killre he will be coached to stardom. He has excellent skating ability.

I played pick-up hockey with corey emmerton, 5th round #9. Last year a goalie got drafted to St. Mikes, but ended up playing junior A in Wellington. I went to school and knew him. He actually goes to my school again cause his season's been over for about a month.

Wellingtons a great Junior A team, my buddy was goalie for them last year and the guy who's in the OHL, well actually both are was thinking about going down 2 years ago.

Theo - not sure about GTHL because in the Hammer were "alliance". I know you have to apply to go and fill out like a resume. My friends were going to try and do it to the NHL draft last year as a joke.

Ya pretty much, I wouldn't exactly call it "easy", because there have been alot of people who were overlooked. I believe one of the questions is whether you intend to play NCAA or go the OHL route, this apperantly has a huge barring on what round you'll go in because it's really next to impossible to do both.

If you play in Ontario, and a certain region of the eastern United States, or Newfoundland (you have an option to go OHL or QMJHL in Newf.) you are eligable between ages 15-16 to 18-19. This year players born between 1988 and 1985 were eligable. Obviously there were only a couple 87's, 86's and one 85. They'll look at you if you play Junior (A-D), AAA, and a bit of AA. Normally, to be drafter after your original year, you should be playing Junior, or less likely AAA. It best to have an agent through the process, especially if it is not your original year. You also must be added to the OHL draft list, which consist of roughly 600-630 players. You can be added by OHL Central Scouting or an OHL team. If you're around 18 it's best to get an agent. But all you have to do is work. Honestly, the whole draft is a load of BS. Don't let it bother you.

If you get an agent you are no longer elibigle for NCAA, so your banking on making a career out of hockey or paying your way through University. Agents make a world of difference, they could be the difference from being drafted mid-late rounds and never being seen. I agree with Theo that the cream will always rise to the top, but alot of fringe players go unseen because they are not looked at often enough. I know a few players that are OHL calibre if they had proper looks. My '85 Hamilton team was highly scouted, but the years before went practically unseen. Now theres more scouts thus more kids getting drafted, kids who would've definately been overlooked in the past.

actually, you can still be eligible for NCAA if you have an agent, they just don't prefer it. I've talked to some schools and gone to a couple seminars and the coahces/scouts prefer that you talk to them yourself not your agent because that shows that you have done the work, and you take initiative(sp?). And I totally agree with EricG. The draft doesn't mean much at all. There are so many players that don't get drafted and just work their way up through the ranks.

Hey Eazy, you heard of Wayne Savage. He was the #1 goalie as a rookie until the other goalie from the previous year came down. That's the guy I was talking about.

Jamie Begin and Corey Oliver, drafted 299th and 300th, last two picks in the draft, I know both of them. Last year a few of my friends got picked. And another guy I know, Dan Taylor, is backup goalie for the Guelph Storm.

Nah man, I knew the goalie who was there before. Both guys left, one was an extremely high pick this past draft (top 10 I believe) the other was my friend. They rotated, but I think my friend got the majority of the playoff starts, I could be misinformed on that though.

At least 25 of my friends were drafted. It's kind of cool to see people you grew up with get here. From the first rounders alone, I spent probably 3 years at the same hockey school with Ryan McInerney (#4) and Payton Liske (#12). Let alone the other tons of guys. There were lots of very, very, very bad picks, and alot of very good players weren't taken or dropped in the draft. I was talking to some friends in the middle of the draft, and a couple guys were getting really pissed. One friend who expected to be taken in the 3rd round starting blaming everyone around him, it was kind of funny to listen to. He went late and will probably be upset for a month and will blame everyone. Had I been taken I would've been bottom 5 in weight. I'll get over it. :(

Yeah I did notice that. I also noticed a "Verbeek" was drafted, as well as another person with another NHL name whose slipping my mind.

I'd think so. It's not like Cheechoo's a common name. There were a few guys who I saw who had NHL player last names...like Verbeek's kid.
