Chadd 916 Report post Posted November 6, 2005 Exxon did make out very well this quarter, thats for sure. And their excuse is that they need the money to go and look for more places to find and drill for oil along with investing money to get new drilling equipment, which is at a shortage now. This is a huge load of crap. There is no shortage in crude oil, the problem is that there aren't enough refineries. The companies that extract the oil can keep up with the demand, but the refineries can't. We need to start finding alternate energy sources so we aren't as reliant upon oil and/or refineries in the future.

Hey, its not necessarily my views, just passing along what they are probably using as excuses. As Chadd says, we need to find alternative energy sources. We started going a great deal in that direction in the early 80's when gas was very expensive, but once the prices returned to normal, the government just said the hell with it. And here we are in 2005. At least that is what one of my prof says, although he is a liberal and enviromentalist so everything out of his mouth has to be taken as a joke or grain of salt at times. I love how people blame the enviromentalist for the reason there are no new refineries. Your telling me that the enviromentalist have more power and money than the oil companies to lobby congress? Even though now we have a oil family president, and a republican congress.
Smith 0 Report post Posted November 6, 2005 I wasn't blaming enviromentalists for anything.Just pointing out that my old teacher has extreme views, so everything he says may have to be taken with a grain of salt. He is extreme left + an enviromentalist, which is pretty much as bad as it gets I meant "your" in general, sorry. To me either side does not care about you or me, they just want to keep their jobs, so they back the flavor of the week.

Environmentalists don't want any new refineries and the average person doesn't want one anywhere near them, those two factors together have had some effect. Also keep in mind that it's more efficient for a refinery to operate as close to capacity as possible. It's not in the oil industrys best (financial) interest to operate a lot of refineries at 60% capacity in the event of a natural disaster, accident, terrorist attack, etc,...
