Broken M-1 and Standard Blades

Recommended Posts

Has anyone used a flipped M-1 so that it accepts standard blades?

I cracked the blade in two and was trying to heat the sucker up so I could pull out the blade but in the process, I ripped the blade off at the fuse point and thus tried chiselling out the tenon. I got pretty fed up with the aramid and carbon fibre getting all over me and am still contemplating flipping the stick around.

I know I could cut the shaft with the remaining tenon but I would have to use a pretty long butt-end to compensate for the lost in height. If I flipped the stick around, I wouldn’t have to cut the shaft at all. I’m pretty aware I would be completely neglecting the purpose of a taperd shaft but I want to consider all options before I decide to cut.

Thanks for the help, folks

What are you using to chissel? Yesterday I successfully converted my Bauer XX cut at the fuse point into a tapered shaft. I bought a rotary tool (JobMate brand) for like $20 bucks at Cdn Tire and a long drill-like attachment (another $6) - the tool I bought didn't have a lot of attachments. Between the long drill and the sander accessory that came with the tool, I was able to get all of the crap out of the shaft. You have to be patient because it's pretty easy to stray and drill into the shaft wall. All in all, I lost about 1/2 inch of shaft at the tapered end due to sloppiness on my part. Plus the inner walls of the shaft weren't that even when I finished. Nonetheless, I heated her up and put in a pro stock Drury synth, and viola: tapered combo. I'll post a pic of the finished product when I can. Good luck.

I heated the blade on a response+ and pulled it out, fits Sr. tapered blades perfectly. The red near the bottom faded from the heating though.
