hollow in order

Recommended Posts

I get guys that insist on a 1/4" cut, and complain when I try to back them down toward a 3/8".  That said I'd never skate on it - I had enough trouble when I tried a 3/8"!  With the deeper cut expect to stop rather suddenly (which is the most likely cause of injury!) and to get tons of grip on corners no matter how badly you set your edges.  Also, you'll sink into the ice more, meaning that you won't glide as well and will likely find manoeuvering at low speeds difficult.

Amen. Not to mention, the skates controlling you, rather than you controlling them.

I refuse to sharpen any deeper than 5/16 and do my best to talk folks away from that. Deep hollows are "crutches", for folks who havent learned to use their edges. :)

I had a guy who was my size 6'+ and 200+lbs and wanted 1/4" hollow on his skates. I refused to do it so he took them to PIAS and they did it. I smiled when I watched him eat ice about 10 times during public skate.

If you are not use to 1/4 definately dull them by rubbing on something. Otherwise knee injury or worse. Best to play it safe.

Its funny how kids around here get the sharpest they can and they say they like their skates extra sharp so they dont have to sharpen them all year. And then they fall all over the place and are slow, and still dont get what the problem is.

i didnt ask for them sharper..i asked for shallower..mom forget..and told the sharpener that i wanted them sharper and he put on a 1/4'...im not expecting anything good, and will rub them on the bench before i hit the ice.

There's a difference between sharp and hollow. Sharpness refers to the edges themselves, and has nothing to do with how deep the hollow is. Actually, if you're going with a real shallow hollow, I would think you would want sharp edges to get that bite into the ice.

A deeper hollow will "feel" sharper but actually won't really be sharper.

Yup. I always tell them there is no such thing as a "sharpest hollow".

They'll look at me weird, but then it gets them thinking, and encourages them to ask, and that gives me a chance to explain to them about hollows.

When I tell customers that they tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. They can feel it's shaprer.

Any fraction you can imagine can be put on a skate. 5/18 is about as deep as any shop will do.

No kidding!

I don't blame the kids on this one.

I've had my share of bad teachers, and I know some people who are in teachers' college, and they aren't the brightest bulbs around.
