Mogilny Released By Devils

Recommended Posts

Mogilny has been very lazy this year...Taking too many notes from Malakhov..

He was pretty lazy in Toronto. He seemed to determine whether the team had a shot or not at winning before the game and then, if they had a chance, he'd put out. I really liked him, and he brought a buisness attitude to the team, but effort was never his strong suit. I always felt it was a job first and a hobby second with him.

It's not a sad effect of the cap, it is a way to clear deadwood out of your cap number. Notice that it is teams who aren't performing up to snuff who are sweeping guys under the rug who aren't getting it done.

What about St. Louis? They could use some help with scoring.

Howabout no one? It's obvious that Almo no longer cares to play the game and is just in it for the pay cheque. Remember, "I know it's (in reference to the lockout) costing me a whole lotta money!"

Time to hang 'em up and call it a half-assed career.

Its over for Mogilny. Bad hip, bad attitude in the room, kaput, c ya. If Montreal takes him, then Gainey was at Chez Paris for 24 hours straight. Bob G is no fool. #89 will not be a Hab. Stop thinking of him as what he was and look at him for what he is now: 36 years old on the downside of his career. When the older Russians start to age they lose a lot quickly. The legs and the desire go first and then nothing is left. There are only two older Russian players who I admire for getting the job done in the twilight of their careers: #1 Igor Larionov: The Energizer Bunny of hockey. He took care of himself and played with his heart and his head on the ice. Drum roll please, #2 Igor Ulanov: Now that the howling has died down, this guy should be out of the league 10 years ago but he isn't. His numbers stink but he is stuck with Cory Cross. However, he get PP time and competes hard every shift in the ultra fast Northwest Division. I give him tons of credit just for sticking around and getting the job done. The guy gets more done with less overall talent than quite a few guys with more talent and less work ethic. Some other older players of many nationalities could learn a thing or two from Igor on desire to compete.

I've always felt this way when Almo was in T.O, one game he'd be dynamite, the next he'd a so lazy it was painful to watch. Someone like him can be a disease in the dressing room especially when they get playing time like Almo did......the rest of the players start to follow suit

Sorry to bring back an old topic. Just curious if anyone knows what became of Mogliny? I know he isn't playing for the Devils right now, is he playing anywhere?

I saw him play a couple weeks ago against Lowell. The man was invisible on the ice.

NJ is screwed now. They can pay him his full deal to toil in the minors or get stuck with 1/2 his deal against the cap if someone picks him up off re-entry waivers. Either way its an expensive situation.

But its a situation that they got themselves into. They offered him an expensive contract at the beginning of the season, and they knew what they were getting. What I dno't understand is why they didn't just keep him in NJ. You have to pay the same amount in the AHL as the NHL. At least if he plays in the NHL there's a chance he'll contribute.

Because as long as he is in the AHL his contract doesn't count against NJ's cap. Would you rather have a multi-million dollar scratch in the bigs or some wiggle room under the cap? I'd take the wiggle room.

Well just don't send him down until you need the wiggle room. Didn't the Devils have cap space even with him in the NHL. He had 25 points in 34 games, not great but not terrible.

They wouldn't have wiggle room with him in the line-up. They were hoping he'd catch fire and be amazing, or else unload someone (to clear cap room) and get some nice picks/prospects in return. It hasn't worked out that way.

He is also bad news in the locker room. The only thing worse than a problem player is one with a big contract. Lou knows he screwed up so he knew he had to get rid of him, no matter what it cost.

Maybe in Toronto but him and Malahkov together in NJ was bad news. Vlad should have played baseball. He would take himself out of the lineup with an upset stomach.

He did work well in Toronto because 80% of the team was philosophy was do what you feel, so a buisness type player did help straighten some guys out (more so than before at least). I can see it being different in NJ, but here alot of media outlets discussed it, apperantly Sundin wants him back to play with. I remember him taking the "white towel" off of Tuckers stick in one of the Ottawa's series.

Why bring him back to the Devils in the first place? If they only wanted him until Elias got back, why give him a big contract?

They were expecting Mogilny to be better than he was and Gionta surprised a lot of people. Before this year, he played more a third liner who chipped in a couple goals here and there.
