wood blades

Recommended Posts

Picked up a couple of Sherwood SOP 950s, Sakic clone. The fiberglass sock is cracked on the bottom after 1 hour of shooting on an outdoor rink. The wood is fine for now, but i'd be surprised if it lasts much more than 3 or 4 more icetimes

I had some terrible luck with the durability of those blades and so did my brother. Check out the Bauer 4000 blades or possibly the Nike Quest 1 or 2s. I bought about 25 Quest 2's when they were $4 at hockeygiant.

they last according to how you play with them and how you maintain them. shooting is what kills wood. if you remove the tape and dry off the blades after use, you can increase durablity. if you seal up the edges real good so that moisture cannot get in, you can increase durability. I can't tell you not to shoot, but if you can maintain them better they will last longer.

i dont know with my last SOP blade its still usable but the bottem is cracked and its getting very soft and its been used for about 6.5 hours. i took the tape of as soon as i would come off the ice even the 2 games i used it i took the tape off dryed it as best as i could and retaped the tape off agian at the end of the game.

The durability of the blades largely depends on your style of play. If you spend a lot of time in the corners you will go through blades pretty quickly. Also, once the blade gets a crack in it, water will get in there and rot out the blade. The age of the blade will also make a difference. If the blade has been sitting on the shelf a the LHS for a year(or two) chances are that it has become brittle and will snap fairly quickly.

They don't last long, but they are cheap enough to throw away every month and put a new one in!

The thing about wood blades that stinks is that the curve on each one is different, despite what is printed on the hosel. I guess the wood warps after it comes out of the factory differently on each blade. You have to take a blade you like with you and go thru the bin to find the 2 out of 3 blades that fit that curve.

I bought a 3-pack of Sher-Wood 950´s just because they were cheap and I liked the Bondra curve....bottom line I broke two of them in one period, first time I used them.

I'm not trying to put anyone down or anything, but I don't see why some people are so anti-wood. I can understand young kids who have had composites from the start, but I think a lot of us grew up using wood. Wood is what all the hockey greats used waaaaay back in the 20th century. I get better puck feel with wood, and I think I get harder shots too, which might be debatable. I also liked how many different patterns were available even if they were a little inconsistent, back in the the day of wood blades. Easton, Bauer, CCM, etc. each offer about 7 patterns each now. I'm only 22, by the way, and didn't even try composite until I was out of high school.

I just put my other SOP in the cut M-1 Grip i have. The balance is beautiful. Holding it in my hands it feels lighter than anything i've ever used. Too bad it'll only last a couple of times. I dont mind wood, but I feel like its not as accurate (torque) as comp blades plus they dont last.
