Louongo leaving FLA

It's true they need a goalie but they do have Dubnyk in the ranks and it's not like this is a team that's on any short-term plan to win like the Wings or Stars.

Interesting tidbit from today's Boston Globe:

"Although his team continues to struggle, Florida Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo is putting up mind-boggling statistics. Back in 2003-04, he faced 2,475 shots, which was 505 more than the goalie with the next-highest total, and had a career-high seven shutouts. Last Tuesday, Luongo earned his 27th career shutout when he and the Panthers beat Washington, 5-0. Of his 102 wins, 26.5 percent have been by shutout."

It's amazing that Mike Milbury packaged Luongo and Olli Jokinen to move up only four spots in the draft to nab Rick Dipietro. It's not as though Luongo was an unknown when he came into the NHL.

And there folks, is the reason why the islanders suck, and Mike Milbury is jobless.

Jokinen was doing nothing on the Isle. DiPietro was coming off a huge season at BU and Parrish was also thrown into the deal. Personally, I wouldn't have dealt Luongo but I don't think it was the dumbest thing he's ever done.

Toronto HAS to pick this guy up! With Belfours contract over this season they can definately afford sign him, he would be a great help. Mind you next season Toronto probably won't be much better than Florida.

Toronto needs a filler for about 2-3 years and Luongo will be looking to get a long term, high cash, Bulin type of deal.

Pogge and Rask are in the wings for the goaltending duties of the future.

Even at the time, I thought it was terrible move because he only moved four spots.

Go to hockeydb.com and check out Isles draft picks over last 10 years or so. Milbury could pick'em, he just couldn't keep'em! It is amazing what he got rid of: Bert, McCabe, Redden, Chara, on and on and on........for basically: squat, zilch, nada, nothing. And they can't play. Milbury and Don Maloney were the bad karma twins for all the Cups the Isles won in the early 80s thanks to Bill Torrey and his staff.

How many of the good draft picks came from trading stuff away? I'm pretty sure Luongo was Toronto's first rounder, and I'd assume it helped the cycle a bit. I didn't think Jokinen was doing overly well on the Isle, but I could be mixed up with a few of there other young guys.

Roberto Luongo- 4th overall pick 1997 draft by New York Islanders. Toronto drafted a garbage can with their first pick, Jeff Farkas, 57th pick. BTW, Farkas' father owns GreatSkate.

New York Islanders traded Wendel Clark, Mathieu Schneider and D.J. Smith to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Darby Hendrickson, Sean Haggerty, Kenny Jonsson and 1st round selection (Roberto Luongo) in 1997.

Bert and McCabe were showing nothing on the Isle. Chara was part of the trade for Yashin, you have to give to get. The Yashin contract, stupid, the trade, eh, not that bad.

I think I'd do Clark and Schneider for Luongo and Jonsson.
