butt end tape

Recommended Posts

One year I was playing without using a butt end and I got checked hard into the boards.  Since the end was open it sliced right through my small finger.  If I had a butt end, my finger would have been smashed, but not cut.  I'd definitely advise against open butt ends.

i thought in some leagues it was illigal to have them open,.

Check the first page of this thread. I didn't paste the rule from the USA Hockey rulebook just for kicks. In any league that follows USA Hockey rules, it applies.

A guy on my team filled his OPS with water, had the cap off the top, and dumped it on a player on the other team.

i wonder what kind of penelty you would get for that. :D that would make your stick pretty heavy and probably not work right.

i use the most horrendous job ever. i keep my butt end in my palm and i liek the feel of it being thicker. the end of my shaft/ops is open and there is no liek circular tape around top ala ryan smyth, just twisted tape around top covered with more tape.

For those of you who like to "spine" the tape, you should check out Oggie's Sticky Grip Foam. When people have a sample of each in both hands, most people like the foam because it has give to it.

i have wanted to try it but not spend the money. it seems like it is a very good idea and i can really see where it woudl be better than just the tape

There's enough in the packing for 3 to 4 sticks, so it's not quite as expensive as you might think.

I like the Ergo Grips, but for people who like a more conventional tape job, I think they'd be pleasantly surprised by the foam.

yeh...

oggie makes great products.

i have the oggie ergo grip on my backup stick, which i use with my vector 120.

pretty decent combo.

my point of course being that oggie is a decent, dependable company...

oh n regarding ur question...

the oggie grip is a good product..

it takes time getting used to though

its skinnier so if u don't use a lot of tape on ur butt end and don't hold it in the palm of ur hands, the ergo grip will probably feel a lot better than the conventional, sqarish shape of the top of a shaft.

it has imporved my stickhandling a little, but the rubbery-grippy material its coated with rips your gloves apart. U can fiz that by simply wrapping it with tape.

It really doesnt do much with ur shot but u have more control over the stick when skating with one hand.

u shud jus check out the site...its got a ton of info

Oggie Grip

Actually, Al Iafrate asked Oggie to add grips to two sticks for the shooting gallery at the Boston tradeshow, then reported later that shot speeds were up across the board for those sticks that had a an Oggie Grip versus similar sticks without.

I wouldn't mind trying the foam if it was available without the stars, squiggly lines and round circles on the sheet. I'm not 10 years old so I wouldn't tape my sticks with stars or squiggly lines. I'd never use them so it would be nice to get sheets of 1/2 inch wide and 1/8 inch wide strips as well. That way you could wrap the foam in the same manner as you would wrap twisted tape before taping over it.

haha ppl on my team do that as a prank to kids that are new to the team (sophmores) its hilarious when they pick up the ops and its like 4 pounds

back on topic - ive tried to go with no tape on my butt end before but i just dont like the way it feels, having a little thinkness at the end where your hand is just feels a bit bettter to me

hahaha

that would be good to gain arm strength....i might just go home and try this!!

ill do it with my gear ops, u think it could help build me wrist strength by adding water?i mena its like an internal stick weight.

would it damage the stick?

I use tape for grip, and to increase the radius of the shaft since the butt end is the tapered end (converted OPS)

Go to the hardware store and get a roll of foam tape weatherstripping. It has adhesive on one side so it is very easy to apply to your stick. The stuff I have is about 1/2 inch wide, and I just slice it down the middle into 1/4 strips before I use it. Tape over it and your stick will look like it always has after you've taped it, but it has a nicer feel to it. It's usually about $2 for a 20 foot roll, so it is much less expensive than a specialty hockey grip item.

There's no reason it woudl damage the stick unless you've got a wood blade in the end. but in a OPS, you should be fine. And yes it would be a good stick handling and strength trainign aid. Imagine takign slapshots or stickhandling with that, then grabbing hold of a Stealth or something...you'd have lightning fast hands. But you'd stlll need to practice to make sure the puck moved with your hands.

Water can't damage composite fibers...they're impervious...so i woudn't worry abotu damaging the stick. Howeever, the added weight could cause stress and flex problems. It's possible taking a hard shot could snap a stick full of water because of the extra weight on the inside.

i hve a stealth, so it would probably feeel weightless after i used the water stick.

Does it damage your palms?

good question. I know guys that put tons of tape around the end of their stick, and it almost looks like patrick roy's goalie sticks of the past. I myself, wrap tape around the end twice. That's it. it's a small section of tape that usually does the same job of grabbing my glove as a gigantic handle like some guys put on. I think it's just a preference thing. What you've used for a long time.

i do the same... i just like having it there...dunno why exactly... if i drop my stick i dont evne risk fumbling it and just grab it by the blade...
