Toronto McCabe Disgrace

Recommended Posts

Just watching the Leafs-Thrashers game and I can't believe what I just saw. Boulton hits McCabe, McCabe goes careening into the boards and slams his knee. Starts writhing around in pain, slams his stick on the boards, yelling, cursing, they get a stretcher for McCabe. He finally limps off with some help. They give Boulton a 5 minute major and a Game Misconduct.

At first you're like, ok, it was a hit from behind. But next shift, there's McCabe leading the charge on the power play! WTF! That is an embarassment to hockey. That ref should be ashamed of himself for being duped into that penalty, where a guy looks like he may never skate again at one moment and is back out skating around on a powerplay no less than a minute later! Boulton better not get suspended. Had that not been done in Toronto, I don't think that call would ever have been made. Not to mention McCabe, and the little show he put on, was right up there with Ribeiro a la playoffs two years ago.

To make matters worse, and make me dislike Leafs fans even more, the 5 minute powerplay is more of a powerplay for the penalty killing Thrashers! They actually outshot the Leafs 4-2. Good! It was funny, they were cheering Belfour for making saves, and it was like, duh! He has to make those saves cuz your powerplay sucks.

I like the 5 and game for the hit, regardless of the severity of injury. It was Aubin and Boulton served the penalty.

dude check the box score and don't listen to tsn

checking from behind - 5 min 13:33, S. Aubin served by E. Boulton

game misconduct - 10 min 13:33, S. Aubin served by E. Boulton

mccabe looked like Ribeiro on that one what a joke...

My mistake. Aubin. Doesn't matter really too much to me who did it, other than the fact that it was done and I can't believe the outcome.

I don't mind the 5. And had McCabe not gotten right back up and made everyone look stupid for believing he really was hurt, I would have been ok with a game. But the fact that he got right back up just pisses me off. I mean, show some tact or something. You just made 20,000+ people (fans, refs, players, and media in the building) think you had your leg shot or something. At least wait till the next period to come back.

And TSN showing me the replay of his little act doesnt make me feel better either.

Why does the outcome matter? If you illegally hit someone on a dangerous play (which it sounds like this was), it doesn't matter if the player is hurt or not. I'm not watching the game, but it sounds like maybe you are overreacting a bit

He couldn't put weight on it when he got up. Haven't you ever had an injury where you thought it was major but was good enough to go a little while later?

The Exelby hit on Sundin was cheap as well. A lot like a typical Stevens hit, 5 seconds after the puck was gone and out of nowhere.

What did Kilger do? Did he jump the guy?

I know by my name you will think I am just defending him because it is McCabe, but I think he was really in pain when it happened. If it was like the Ribeiro thing, he wouldn't have gone to the dressing room. He thought he was really hurt. I have had that, where something happens and I think it is worse then it is right away.

And the Leafs PP doesn't suck, its in the Top 5 in the League. You sound more like a Leaf hater, then looking at it realistically.

Leafs PP was top 2 before McCabe went down with an injury. Excelby's flying elbow seems to omitted from everyone, but being run from behind injurying your knee in the spot that had just kept you out for 8 games is. I don't like his slamming of the stick and such, but in all fairness he may not have known the injury as he wasn't putting weight and it was the area he just injured.

I saw a bunch of replays and it looked like a shoulder, not an elbow. That said he took multiple strides, left his feet and hit a guy who didn't have the puck.

The clip (only one) I have seen looks like an Elbow, but it could be due to the run and jump.

The angle from across the ice looks worse than any of the others, that's probably the one they'll use on replays.

Just saw it again, it looks like he has his elbow up, but his beody shifts as he jumps in there air and catches Sundin with the back portion of his shoulder.

When there is no hitting in the NHL, everyone cries about it. When a big hit is thrown, everyone says its dirty. Make up your mind. This is known as the "Mack" influence! Take it away, Johnny!!

I'm all for hard, clean hits. I have never been in favor of blindside hits well after a player releases the puck and I never will be.

Keep your head up. Its the NHL.

It's also the type of thing that confuses newcomers to the sport and holds the NHL back in the US. You can't decapitate a WR after the ball is gone, but it's ok (sometimes) in hockey. Personally, I'd rather watch Mats Sundin on the ice and not Garnett Exelby. I actually like Exelby most of the time and most of his play that I have seen has been clean, hard but clean. I just don;t like those late, out of the blue hits.

After that Super Bowl, do not bring football into the discussion! After 35 years of watching hockey, I can't worry about newcomers to NHL. If you like hockey and want to play, be prepared to get hit. This is not something that is holding back hockey in the US. I think football, baseball, and basketball are holding back hockey in the US as well as the lack of rinks compared to Canada!

The play was still "live", no whistle, while in football, after an incomplete pass the play is whistled "dead" and yes, you cannot "decapitate" a wide receiver.

technically once another player makes contact with the puck, the original player is no longer in posession of the puck and no longer fair game. Even if the timing was clean in your mind, you can't justify the charge.

My what influence?

And not seeing it, it's shitty if McCabe Ribeiro'd his way around that play but Kosy's point is valid: It should be 5 regardless of any injury or not.

That said, I want to hear zero shit from a Rags fan about faking injuries until they watch Kovalev against the Nords in the '95 playoffs.

Keep in mind Tucker threw a similar hit on Gonchar a few years ago and got a 2 game suspension for it.

I haven't seen the hit but sometimes if you do get levelled the is not so much pain but shock makes it pretty bad, but will go away quickly. But if he was just miling it to get the call then is pathetic, but happens in other sports all the time, in soccer the players are taught how to dive.
