seanmccann 3 Report post Posted February 21, 2006 I public skated a while ago on West Edmonton Mall's ice and it was very soft. I heard that due to the sky light above the ice, it is extremely hard to see the puck.
Jason Allison 0 Report post Posted February 21, 2006 I've played at a rink in a mall in San Diego, the La Jolla ice chalet or something. The rink was actually more or less built into the food court and the smell of the whole place was a mix between panda express and hockey gear.

Shorthanded67 0 Report post Posted February 21, 2006 The St. Louis Blues practice facility is in a shopping mall. The St. Louis Mills. Not sure of exact dimensions but I'd guess that it's 3/4 size of a full rink.
Steveo 0 Report post Posted February 21, 2006 This weekend I played in a tourney in the middle of a Mall in Cambridge Ontario ? Really cool actually , NHL size , decient ice , huge score board.Kinda wierd having people watch while they ate in the food court ? Only downfall was as the mall got busier the temp on ice got hotter.Anyone else played in a mall ? I play there all the time, they have good pick-up times, most noteably their Friday from 3:30-5:30. I am a member there so it only costs me $4.50 for the 2 hours, which is great value. It is a great rink, except it can get rather warm and sometimes it takes a good few minutes for the ice to freeze after the zamboni gets off the ice. Yeah it did take a bit to freeze the water but it was frozen before the start of the game.Only downfall was the glare from the small windows above the food court, they killed my scratched to bitts visor Were you there this weekend at all ? The rink was actually more or less built into the food court and the smell of the whole place was a mix between panda express and hockey gear. I proposed to my wife at the La Jolla UTC in an extremely romantic fashion while we were waiting for friends to join us for public skate. We ordered the ring for her at a downtown jeweler, and The Big D worked downtown at that time. I met her at the food court above the skating rink and we were holding hands for a few minutes before it dawned on me, "Oh, you picked up your ring! So, you wanna get married??"Now, is that romantic or is that romantic? :D
Roach 0 Report post Posted February 21, 2006 Very romantic indeed, Salming! All the rinks here in the Philippines are in malls. I've also played in the Hong Kong Dragon center which is in the Dragon center mall complete with a roller coaster above the rink. It's hilarious when slapshots are deflected upward and "PING!" off the roller coaster.

DigDug 5 Report post Posted February 21, 2006 It truly is amazing how different things are up there in Canada. The chance of having a rink in a Mall down here in the NJ/NY is less than being struck by lightning on a full moon.

I have played at the one at the St. Louis Mills. Nice rink. I have also skated in a mall in Colorado Springs, but it was a decently warm day, so I couldn't tell if the ice was soft because of the weather or just due to a bad facility. kosydar 0 Report post Posted February 22, 2006 I used to play in one up in Portland. It was in a shitty mall and it had no dressing rooms, so everyone in the food court could look down and see kids changing. In fact, I think it was the rink Tonya Harding trained at. denverbronco86 0 Report post Posted February 22, 2006 now I'm skating in TX at some malls (Grapevine, Arlington even stonebriar a couple times..) outside of some dude dropping his half-caf decaf double doppio soy grande on the rink its been alright..still better than Addison I definitely agree with with you there, "The Rink in Addison" (Or whatever it's called now, if it's even still open) was one of the worst rinks I ever played in, especially when some of the locker rooms were just hanging tarps. I did like the smaller rink (about 1/3 regulation size) they had when I played in a 3 on 3 league a while back, that was fun, mainly because of the ice time and the high scoring.I would consider DPSC-Grapevine (Polar Ice, as I knew it) to be a little bit better than the average mall rink, because it's significantly detached from the rest of the Grapvine Mills Mall, resulting in better climate control.I also played a few games at the Stonebriar Mall in Frisco, Texas, and I can remember being surprised by how little the ice quality or the temperature bothered me, I didn't really mind it all, all the random people on upper levels and around the rink was a bit disorienting though. There's an ice rink in Colorado Springs at the Chapel Hills Mall that I've been too, but I haven't skated on it. I do remember thinking that the ice was probably pretty poor as they had huge solarium windows on one side of the rink that probably let an awful lot of heat in. The biggest thing about mall climate control that bothers me is that when it's too warm, I get sweat streaming down my face, into my eyes, etc. I was in a non-mall rink (probably 20 degrees colder) last night and I didn't even need the towel I usually bring to keep my face dry; it was a night and day sort of difference
