Skate sharpener brands..

Recommended Posts

I am making a list of known skate sharpener machines and their prices (for the low end models), as I am in the market to buy one. If you can help out, please do so:

Wissota - Wissota 911 - $750

EZ-Sharp - Lightweight Series $1,100

Blademaster - Portable SPB-850 $1,200

BlackStone - Portable $2,000

ProSharp - SkatePal $2,450

IceSkateology - $2,700

Cagone - $6,495

Dupliskate - Non-portable $10,000

Fleming Gray - FG-2 $3,200

Tudor Corporation Ltd., (403) 250-7225 Makers of coin-op sharpening machine. Recent company news suggests they are selling this part of their business.

Tilly Industries - May manufacture components of skate sharpening machines

Edgecare is out of business. Eurovac doesn't make them anymore but still has dressing diamonds for them.

You're missing Blackstone, don't have a current price list but the website is www.blackstonesport.com

EZ-sharp is another one

Ok, so I've updated the list. Any ideas on where I can find a cheaper used model? $750 is still a little pricey for me. Obviously I've been trying ebay, online pennysavers, calling all the companies above.. I live in Washington, which isn't a big hockey state, so its not like I can just find anyone who has one to sell.

The only way to fing a cheaper one is ebay, and you get what you pay for. Find a good used Wissota, that's your best bet. For small volume, the Wissota is all you need.

FYI: shipping is going to cost you more as well. They're all fairly heavy and shipping will bump up the cost at least another $50-$100.

The Blackstone and the Cagone look really easy to use. I've used the Dupliskate and I didnt like it, but then again it was a manual operation type machine. I really sucked at it when I first started using those about 8 years ago. Just one of my functions at the sports shop, but I was the one that got stuck sharpening skates for some reason or another. Nothing like dealing with a fickle hockey player after you've screwed up the blade

What would your volume be? I know Washington isnt a huge hockey state, but has produced its share of players and has several minor/junior league teams Im sure. Are you the only skate shop in the area?? How many skates do you normally sharpen during a busy period?

Well if he wants to get an actual machine for just he and his wife. I guess he can, if it is worth the investment to him. Wissota is probably the way to go if I had an extra $500 laying around.

Yeah, a wissota is probably what I'll get. I was in contact with that ebay ad you just posted. Unfortunately that machine needs to be bolted down. I need one that can just be used on a desktop. It is a good deal though at $575, considering it's the same thing as an iceskateology.com machine. (see first post).

Why do you think the incredible edger is so much better? Btw, it's not exactly the incredible edger - it is an older version of it, but it's about the same if you examine the pics on the website vs. the auction.

Wissota and Incredible Edger are not the same machine. Just get a folding bench from a hardware store and you'd be set.

I was just assuming from this comment that you were saying the incredible edger was better. Like saying "An f-16 and the a-4 are not the same machine"... two products that perform the same function but one is better...

I really don't have room for another bench. My garage is already packed. I guess I could mount it to a board and stick it on the table I have when I'm ready to use it, but what a pain and storage would suck. A table top model in a case would be so much easier. I will wait it out for a wissota, blademaster or the like.

I'm assuming the A-4 is better because it can land on a ship. Let's see a F-16 do that. :)

I don't know how you read that! I said I would probably get a wissota and then I went into the ebay machine, which is the incredible edge. Anyway, I did find out that the Edgecare MX II is no longer manufactured. (There is one for sale on Ebay right now for $300) It used to be made by a company who is now called Eurovac (http://www.eurovac.com/). They still have some diamond tips for them, but no grinding wheels, no other replacement parts. I would say for $300 it would not be worth it, unless someone knew if other grinding wheels and tips would fit in it.

Anyone familiar with the Edgecare and might know? Also, does anyone know if it would be using bearings? Do most other brands use bearings?

It probably could land on an aircraft carrier. Just need arresting hooks

Actually, a F16 if it tried to land, it's landing gear would colapse and be driven up into the fuselage. Wimp ass aircraft. Now the Phantom, F-4, that's another story.

Thats why in the 80s they developed an F16 with a different landing gear for the Navy, but due to costs and the emergence of the F18 hornet.. They scrapped the program.
