Jagr's Illegal Stick

Recommended Posts

As I recall the original restrictions on the curve rules came not so much because the curves created added velocity thereby becoming more "dangerous" to the goalies, but because the excessive curves could create directional changes in the flight of the puck that the goalies could not adjust to...hence leading to the argument that the goalies were more prone to getting hit where they did not expect to. Had more to do with the goalies looking bad on a shot than injuries though as most were already wearing protective masks by that time, although throat protection was not yet in vogue.

There was a semi famous player back in the days when the old EPHL was around, by the name of "Boom Boom Caron"...he lead that league in scoring more than a few times on the virtue of his shot....usually scoring at least one or two goals from around center ice when he played a game. His shot was famous for puck movement....I remember seeing Bruce Gamble(later with the Boston Bruins) take one of his shots right in in the cup..... from center ice...you could hear the "thwock" over the din of the 5000 or so fans watching the game.

Gamble pitched face forward and just lay there in a vertical fetal position until two team mates picked him up under the arms and towed him away.

Even back then I am sure most goalies could see the puck well enough to catch the hardest shots from center(with the possible exception of Bobby Hull's), but the additional puck movement gave them problems....a la "knuckle puck" from the "Mighty Ducks" movies.

They talked about this during the satellite hostove last night. They thought the rule was crap for the shootout, because now it adds time to soemthing they wanted to get done quickly. Also, they mentioned that how can it be explained to a casual fan who's just excited the rangers are doing well that Jagr can't shoot?

I think it was Houston who said they should keep the rule to keep guys in front of the net from getting hurt, I agree with that.

Sometimes I have to wonder whether the NHL cares more about stick blades then cheapshots/headshots injuries

I think it's funny that the NHL has a rule that limits the curve of the stick for "safety reasons" but has no rule to require visors. Don't you dare play with an illegal curve, but if you don't want to wear a visor that okay.

CCM Thornton retail is illegal.

My friend has a V130 Thorton and that curve does not look illegal at all.It looks like its a little bigger than a Modano.I think they changed it from the one on the old V110.

I remember reading an interview with Jagr after he got caught the first time and he said when he was in pittsburgh using wooden sticks they were always illegal now that he uses composites they are "legal" since he can't modify them and he's been caught, now twice, with an illegal stick, when he was in pittsburgh he never got caught according to the article.

the only thing i dont get is he keeps getting caught, it must be illegal and that pic its like jags, wtf? the olympics have no curve restrictions, maybe his stick is illegal in the nhl due to blade size or length or height, maybe its not the curve....

Good Pic of Jagr's curve,it really doesnt look that big at all.

Toe curves generally measure larger than they look while heel curves generally measure smaller than they look. It's something of an optical illusion.
