Shin pads? in fron of skate tongue?

Recommended Posts

I have seen guys do it different ways..what is considered correct..the shin guard in front of the skate tongue, or tucked in behind it? Always wondered..seems like it would be hard to tighten skates with pad behind tongue. Thanks for the knowledge.

I think over the tongue offers more protection, but behind the tongue offers more forward flex. I wear mine on the outside.

i'm not sure what would be right or wrong, but i would think it would be all personal preference. i wear mine on the outside. my shins are too long and wide to fit behind the tongue.

it only looks bad if your skate has a small tongue.if they have a pretty big tongue it looks cool like grafs.ie segei fedorov. i think fedorov has a cool look with a his tongue out. but on the other hand if you have a small tongue like missions you should definatly put it on the outside. i used to wear it on the inside of my grafs until i bought new shinguards and there to long to wear it on the inside. ive gotten used to it on the outside, now it feels to me like when you where the shin guards on the outside you are more on your toes for some reason.

I alternate between 8090 jofas and old ass 5030 sherwood shins, the 5030 is smaller and can fit behind a tongue, but the 8090s have to go over.

Based on myself, I find I get more forward flex with it inside the tongue. When it's outside, you can only bend as much without the shinpad jabbing into the skate.

Same. I also wear Grafs, and they have the huge tounges, so its hard to fit them all underneath my shinpads.

I tried it with the 8090 - the S500 really doesn't work well with it. I was going to try out a pair of M1 shinpads but I don't know about that anymore. I ended up modding the 8090 - shaved down the plastic and cut some of the foam out from the ankle.

Tongue over the skate or tongue in behind the skate has a lot to do with what tongue your skate has and what shin pad you have.. for instance.. I wear bauer vapor 6 skates and i had ccm shin pads and I could wear the shin pads behind the tongue and then I got bauer supreme 3000s, I then was able to wear the tongue behind the shin pad. I believe that wearing hte tongue behind the shin pad gives me a lot more forward flex and it is more comfortable.

so how do you like the 8090? what other skates have you tried?

Haven't skated in the 80-90, however it is a very comfortable skate. I tried them on when I got them in and it feels great, even at a D width.

there's no right or wrong way to do your shins. Some guys on my team put them inside the tongue and others on the outside. It's a matter of personal preference. I wear mine on the outside over my tongue and have no problem skating with it like that.

Ya I agree, it's all PP. I wear my pads on the outside. However I am debating on what skates to get this year, and I think my current habit might change if I get Grafs, because they have massive tounges, if I get Mission S-400's tounges will obiously be on the inside, and same if I get Easton Air SBX's.

I put my shinnies outside the tongue of my skates. I find it allows for better flexion. If you tuck your shin pads inside your skate tongues, your shin pads will start to move up and down on your legs if you skate with a lot of ankle flexion. There's less resistance with your pads outside your tongues, unless you wear longer shin pads...
