vermette heel shaving

Recommended Posts

i was looking at some of vermette's sticks and he shaves his blade down really thin (for about a puck lengths in distance and height the heel is shaved down so its only like a 1cm-2cm thick) on the very heel of his blades. Does anybody have any ideas whyd you hed do this? Im thinking maybe so he can saucer it easier or something....

1-2 cm? How does that not break on slapshots? I would think the flex with be intollerable, but then again I have really stiff sticks.

Sometimes players shave the blade at the bottom of the heel in order to make their curve legal.

they didnt let him shoot in a shootout once because of it. Then the ref admitted they were wrong the next day.

I could see them changing the rules related to curves and measuring them next year. People are finding ways to make illegal curves legal. They should probably just do away with the curve rule altogether. However, I wonder if players would have special shootout sticks with insane curves that would totally fool goalies. That would definitely be a bad thing IMO.

If it's as thin as described, it isn't legal in the NHL either.

The blade of the stick shall not be more than three inches (3") in width at any point nor less than two inches (2"). All edges of the blade shall be beveled. The curvature of the blade of the stick shall be restricted in such a way that the distance of a perpendicular line measured from a straight line drawn from any point at the heel to the end of the blade to the point of maximum curvature shall not exceed one-half inch (1/2").

You can't make an illegal curve legal. It's one or the other.

it is as thin as described and the curve isnt even very big so I dont know if that is an explanation. I know what you mean though jason, by shaving down the heel the tool that they use to measure the curves would be forced closer to the middle of the blade because where you put the tool on the heel would be further deeper.

You know it! Higgins is the man! I heard that while watching a Habs game recently. I think Healy was the one that mentioned it. He probably has a curve that is just over 1/2 an inch and he shaves it to make it legal.

I remember the old Sherwood Mogilny curve circa 1994-95 was somewhat similar in what you are describing. Basically on the heel it was thin as anything then towards the end of the blade it got wider. Very big curve too but if I remember I used a bunch of those blades and never really broke them in that area.

so they shave the thickness of the blade? I thought you meant they made the bottom of the blade, the part that contacts the ice into like a wedge.
