Your Top 10 Greatest hockey moments (NHL or other)

Recommended Posts

Be warned - I'm a die hard Oiler fan so this WILL be laden with Oiler references..

10. Going to Edmonton's first-ever NHL game with my Dad (Still have the ticket stub)

09. Watching Gretzky & co. defeat the Montreal Canadiens in their first playoff series win (again with Dad).

08. The sadness of losing to the Islanders in '83

07. The sheer eleation of beating them in '84

06. The shock when Calgary beat them in '86

05. The greater shock when they won the most unlikely one in '90

04. The come from behind win against Dallas to win the series (before getting punted by them for what seems like forever after)

03. When the CBA was done - and the Oil Signed Pronger, Peca - gave us all hope..

02. Taking the Wings in 6 this year - with ME taking my father - instead of the other way around (I finally get to pay him back after all those years)

01. Game 6 against San Jose - looking down the row and seeing my Father and my now 10 year old son with their arms wrapped around each other in joy as the time wound down.

A bit cornball I know - but I've been thinking about that moment since last week - and haven't stopped smiling about it.

Share your memories be they NHL or other.

Last night at dinner - my Dad told me that game 6 will be his fondest memory of this year - regardless of what happens.

Kinda random... Bure coming to Vancouver. Canadiens winning in '93. 2002 Avalanche vrs. Red Wings series. Same year, the Canucks going up on Detroit 2-0, but then after Lidstrom's goal in the 2nd of the 3rd, the series went downhill from there.

just some games I remember watching.

Play-off memories:

Gretzky's top-corner slapshot vs. Calgary.

Bure's deke vs. NYR in '94.

Scott Stevens hit on Paul Kariya... and then Kariya comes back!

Darren McCarty goal vs. the Flyers.

Yzerman passing the Cup to Konstantinov.

Steve Smith's 'own goal'.

The 'Battle of Alberta' through the '80's.

Ray Bourque hoisting the Cup, but not as a Bruin (not sure how I felt about that)

Some of my greatest hockey moments have come from this past year and 05-06 hockey season. Such as when Florida Panthers played New York Rangers and went into a shootout and Olli Jokinen stuffed it five hole for the Win. I havent lost my mind like that in a while. Also a few nights before that, the Panthers played the Tampa Lightning and were up by 4 goals in the start of the third. They ended up having to go into overtime until Olli Jokinen got a breakaway pass from Jozef Stumpell and won it in over time, 5 hole. But my greatest hockey memory is when I was coaching my 14 and under team and were losing by 5 goals with 5 minutes remaining in the game. My team ended up winning 7-6 final with 30 seconds remaining in the game. After that game the parents looked at an 19 year old coach a little differently B)

3 laying on my back and looking up at center ice at my first ice hockey game when i was like 13-14. ya i started old but i played street hockey on blades for years before and coming from an asian family it took a LONG time to convince my parents to let me

4 getting my first set of ice hockey gear after saving up for a few years with all my birthday and christmas money (my mom got the skates for me though cause i didn't have enough).

5 watching Bure play when he was with the canucks even though i've never been a canucks fan.

6 being able to play hockey almost everyday after school when my parents thought i was at a friends place doing school projects... :P

7 jason arnott's rookie year with the oilers.

My favourite moment is probably Colorado winning the Cup in 2001, don't remember watching in 1996 and the Leafs haven't done anything of significance.

Least favourite would definately be when Carolina eliminated Toronto in 2002, that was our year.

These aren't necessarily the greatest, just the ones I remember the most vividly (in no particular order):

1. Hextall's first goal.

2. Hextall's first playoff goal.

3. Primeau's goal to end the game that wouldn't end.

4. Pete Peeters (in his Caps days) getting knocked out by a shot betwee the eyes (by a Devil if I remember correctly).

5. The first few games of watching Lindros in Philly (you gotta admit, the dude was good in the beginning).

6. Winning the Bear's Cup my senior year of high school...the inagural year of a new high school hockey league (CPIHL).

7. Scoring a goal on my first collegiate hockey shift , followed up by 2 more in the game for my first hat trick.

8. Scoring a goal on my last collegiate hockey shift.

Since I don't live in any major NHL city.. mine are mostly ECHL

1. When our ECHL team won both the Brabham Cup and Kelly Cup in the same season. I was 8 and a lot of those players I looked up to even though I knew it was just ECHL.

2. Our second Kelly Cup.. I remember the crowd was ecstatic and crazy for an ECHL game

3. The Hurricanes Stanley Cup run in 2002..

4. The Hurricanes current run for the Cup now

5. Watching guys like Ray Bourque, one of my favorite players, and Dave Andreychuk finally hoist the Cup after all the years they played

In no particular order:

The best:

Trent Klatt scoring against Minnesota with 1.3 seconds left to force OT

Claude Lemieux getting a righteous ass kicking for breaking Drapers face

Gretzky and Lemieux playing together in the '88 Canada Cup

The worst:

A cup being won with a foot in the crease (a 'no goal' for the whole season)

Watching the Jets leave Winnipeg, and the Nordiques leave Quebec

Sather and Messier come to Vancouver

I can't think of an order to put these in so I will go chronilogical.

- 2nd grade laying on the living room floor getting to see my first hockey game(lived in Kansas at the time), the Miracle on Ice. My parents had the hardest time finding me a hockey stick after that

- the first hockey game I went to, Blues beat the North Stars

- the 2nd hockey game I went to, Blues vs. Hawks in the 80's was great

- being at the Monday night miracle, they call it that here, Wickenheiser scored to advance the Blues to the third round

- Brett Hull coming to St Louis, the Blues would be gone if not for him

- walking into the bathroom at a bar after a game, Shannie was having some fun with a girl on the sink, I always regret not asking him for his autograph then, and no, the girl was not Janney's wife

- game 3 of the '96 finals when i lived in florida, the panthers lost but it was still a great time

- working in a resteraunt and waiting on a table with the Cup as the center piece, that thing was pretty damn heavy, it would have looked strange hoisting it over my head in a tux so I didn't

- Taking my oldest son to his first game, Blues vs. Blackhawks, he just loved being able to chant blackhawks suck with the crowd and not getting in trouble from mom,

there was a game against the Oilers later that season and it was all quiet before a face-off and he decides to scream Canada sucks, realizing the error of his ways he did change it to Oilers, The guys around us bought him a hot dog and coke for the good laugh, another time we were second row with a face-off right in front of us and he stood up, hit the glass and told Ricci he looked like a dog.....man was that one funny

- taking my 8 year old to his first game this year with the Caanucks in town and sitting in the first row, he jumped at the first couple checks and then would stand up and cheer everytime there was another hit there, at the end of the 2nd period, Jamal Mayers came over and gave him the game puck over the glass, now that is his favorite player, right after the season, a friend of mine called Mayers and to find out when he would be at his shop so my son could thank him for memory and get an autograph

**FUTURE**

- being at the game and watching either Jonathon Toews or Jordon Staal hoist the cup and skate around the rink with it, I think it will be Toews as the #1 pick to us this year but who knows

- My most favorite will definately be hearing my little brother's name called at the NHL entry draft in a couple years, he is a '91, hopefully 1 of his old coaches who is a scout now for the Blues makes the GM take him
