Skate dilemma

Recommended Posts

I currently have a pair of 8090s size 7.5, I love how they feel on the ice. I just have a better feel for the ice and am able to make very tight turns. These are awseome skates... however they are too damn wide for my foot. They are very roomy and start to hurt my heel after they absorb some water/sweat.

What is it about the construction on the 8090s that give it this "feel" for the ice and tighter turning ability? is it the stiffness of the boot and the Tuuk LS2 holders? or just the holders? I want to find a skate that fits my foot better but DONT want to lose the skating ability these skates give me. I have never been this strong on skates before.

Although someone may know far more about this.... my research suggest the 8000 is essentially the same skate as 8090 - only the 8090 is a wider fitting boot.

8090 is pretty different from the 8000. Have you tried Vapors? They also have the LS2 and they fit narrower. The vapors won't be as stiff as the 8090s though.

Not really

Awww...geee, Chad....can you give a little more explanation? I mean, I am on this site to learn...

My understanding is they are both classic fit skates with carbon fibre outsoles, clarino lining, Tuuk lightspeed holders and the same pitch. And the most significant difference is that the 8090's were made with different lasts...making the instep and the width both quite a bit wider than the 8000. So it fits wider feet and ankles than the 8000.

What is the other significant difference...I genuinely want to know.

I don't think you guys are seeing the point...he says he likes the 8090 skate but the fit isn't for him...so obviously he doesn't need a high volume, wide skate...so, as the 8000 is very similar to the 8090 EXCEPT that is it not as wide/deep, it would work for him. She's right.

From the limited info in the original post I would consider trying a C width (if possible) before moving on to other models. The 8000 was a disappointment to most people I know, yet those same people had great luck with the 8090s. Next time I see them I'll ask them exactly why they liked one and hated the other.

I haven't skated in the 8090s because I know they aren't a good fit for me, but I've been using the 8000s for the last 4 months and couldn't be happier with them. They are the only skates I've ever had that felt good right out of the box. I decided not to bake them because they felt so perfect. I don't care that they aren't as light as other skates because the fit matters most.

I'm not saying they'll be good for everyone. My point is that you just need to find the right skate for your foot....which has been said many times here on MSH!

Grave77digger:

What skates did you use before the 8090s, which holders did they have, and did you change the stock pitch and/or radius?

Exactly. I love my 500s and they aren't the lightest boot out there. They fit my foot better than anything else I've tried and I love them for it. Other members have tried them and found them lacking for various reasons. It's all about what works for you.

Tkanks JR for inlighting Hockeymom, C width may certainly help, but also consider length, a boot that is to big could also add to the problem.... it is amazing how many elete players who come into our test program every year are 1 to 1,5 sizes too big, this from a market that is suposed to know how to fit kids properly..odd but a riality.

There are a lot of width and length offerings to properly fit anyone at BNH. Overall volume, heights, wrap etc, from one model to another is minimal and insignificant compared to being fitted properly.

I have a 8090 question about Jr size skates. Most of us buy a Jr skate a 1/2 size or so big in order to get a full season out of them for our kids. Is there any inherent problems with this skate bought big to accomodate? I ask because this is a wider deeper skate to begin with.

C width may certainly help

The C width would be custom, right?

No its Narrow i think.

I think the one90 would be more tight(less space). You might want to try these out. I am not an expert in skate fitting thought, JR would have to confirm...

Ya it's just a narrower width. In some skates it isn't available though.

I had the same problem with my 8090's , they felt too wide for my feet. I almost sold them, I happen to be my LHS and thought I would try the Shock Doctor Footbeds, I was amazed at the difference they made , they raised my foot just enough and now I am in love with my skates again :-)

At least take the skates to your LHS and throw a pair of the foot beds in and see how they feel.

it's going to be tough to find C widths as many shops don't carry that width. At my store, the only C width we've ever carried was in the Easton Air SBX. Never seen any other skate come in that width in my store.

srry for brining up an old thread.

I have 8090s, and theyre too wide, the same problem the topic starter had. i am still growing, and soon my feet will probably too big for these skates. i was wondering if the Vaper 20(XX) skates had the same fit, just not as wide. My LHS doesnt carry good skates, just some Vapor 6(VI) and '99 '00 tacks, so i cant try them on.

I tried the XXs and they were much to narrow for me, and the 8090 was is ALOT wider, would be nice to have an inbetween.

XX's in a EE maybe?
