Ultralite blade sand coating?

Recommended Posts

I got my new blades today from hockeymonkey.. They are replacement Ultra Lites. I dont remember them being sand-ish coated from the ones that I have played around with. Is this new or am I just blind or something?

BTW, heres the link to show exactly what I was getting. I remember them being kind of glossy (like a synergy blade).. I dunno.. maybe I just am ignorant and never noticed.

I could never really understand what the Z-tac finish was supposed to do ?

add more grip to the blade ? but if that's the case wouldn't that purpose be defeated when hockey tape is wrapped over it ?

wasnt it supposed to be so you didnt have to use tape? Just put the blade in and use it until the blade breaks or the coating wears off....

They are the Blue Ultralites.

I used it for the first time with my ultralite shaft and I really like it. I wanted to try out a new curve and I went with the lindstrom. It was the same lie as my other sticks but a lot more open than my coffey curve. It took a few shots to adjust, but because its so open, its really easy to get my shots up a little bit higher. I have drop in tonight and some ice time on tuesday, so let see how it holds up to some slapshots.

that sounds like a resonable idea, but I don't think I have ever seen anyone in my life use a composite blade/stick with no hockey tape. The least I seen is a strip of tape at the bottom half of the blade or taping of the toe.

Like I said...that was the Idea....I tried it once with the green ultra lite blade. I didnt like it at all....but hey, innovation has to start somewhere.

fair enough. that would be a good explanation of why the z-tac blade was discontinued too.

speaking of innovation, I think they could go back to that idea and just tweak it. Instead of that z-tac coating they could use another type of compound that is softer but still give friction/grip. I hate using hockey tape and ice/water soaking up.

Thats why you use wax

wax helps but after 1-2 periods the tape is still pretty soaked up.

I could do what my friend does, waxes and then uses heat gun to melt it enough so that it soaks into the tape then waxes it again for a second coat (maximum waxing), but at that point there is so much wax that the friction from the tape is almost zero which pretty much defeats the purpose of using hockey tape.

I have to wax my tape or it doesn't last a period. If I do wax it, the tape usually lasts for a full game.

i believe you use the higher end stuff ? Mr. Zogs or something of the sort ?

I just use candle wax, cheap stuff :( but cheap price :)

Even taping/waxing my stick once or twice a week, sex wax seems to last forever.
