Phone Bill

Recommended Posts

I had like 4 2 hour calls. Cost me like 90 bucks and then 40 extra for text messaging. I had my phone hooked up to MSN and that cost me $150. Took that off right away.

are these monthly phone bills, how the hell do you kids afford this? i pay like 25 a month for unlimited nights and weekends and 100 anytime minutes, how often do you need to be talking to people? why not just sit through the class and get an education and save the talking for after class?

We can text in class !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU GUYS ARE BRILLIANT

omg this is like a whole new cheating package!

Please tell me youve heard of texting in class. Are you that far behind?

HA! Exactly why we've banned all cell phones, pdas and electronic devices, including dictionaries, from all tests and exams for ...umm... at least five years now.

We also regularly get training and updates on all the essay sites and have upgraded software to make it easier to catch cheaters. I go to a training session every summer on the new and innovative ways people cheat. Gotta love technology!

With all of this effort spent on cheating... and all of the extra effort to stop it/catch it ...gee, it would be nice to just go back to teaching and learning. sigh. Such a waste of time and effort.

Don't know what it is like at your school and level ... but at the college level you're unceremoniously kicked out. Hard to explain to the parents who are usually footing the bill, and has stopped more than one career. Also have had students' work picked up from computers and used by another student...in that case BOTH students get kicked out. Nasty surprise for the one who didn't intend to cheat.... sucks, but that's life.

Heck, I'm not naive...there will always be people who cheat....just thought I'd do the "teacher-thing" and mention the consequences. Now I'll go back to my summer vacation.

Is it cheating if you write a paper for one class and use it for 2 other classes?

The quick answer is yes. The more involved, considered answer is...it depends on the classes/circumstances and may indeed be fine.

Usually, the assignment requirements are at least slightly different in each class. So submitting the exact same paper would pretty much guarantee mediocre marks at best.

If you're looking to cut corners, my knee jerk advice would be to use the same research for different projects but write the paper for each assignment.

HaHa, thanks for the advice. I'll use it when I start my masters.

But my final year of undergrad I had 3 Finance classes, Corp. Tax Law, Financial Statement Analy, and some bs FIN 352, and used the same eBay paper for all three. I received high marks for all of them. For such a prestigious business school, my core classes were rather easy.

actually, if you do that it's called "self plagiarism"....you're supposed to quote/paragraph and cite yourself

at least that's what I learned roflmao

True, but Im saying between periods and when you have to meet up with them. Its too damn loud to hear anything

Yeah, and that's when you send one or two. 3000 texts a month assuming you're up for 14 hours a day is 7.14 messages an hour, or sending a message every 8 minutes for the entire amount of time you spend awake in a month. Sorry, but that's just retarded.

You're quite right Perry... and a very good point to raise. That's exactly why I said the quick answer is yes, but I should have taken the time to provide more info.

Although as it turns out, the paper in question wasn't his own work and Juice is blind lucky they are sloppy with undergrads... or it would have been gonzo for him.

The corner I suggested cutting was to use the same research but write original papers for each assignment... in Juice's example 3 different papers.

Many profs don't mind this, myself included .. in fact there are several assignments in our program where I recommend students do this. In these cases, the key isn't gathering the research it is what they've done with it. The thought process and analysis brought to the work is evaluated.

Obviously, you need to know what your school's standards are and what each prof expects. We're considered tough, and most of our assignments are designed to be "cheat proof".... but we're focused on keeping the currency of the program - and our grads - high.

I suppose I don't understand your point. Plagiarism is defined as the act of appropriating the literary composition of another author, or excerpts, ideas, or passages therefrom, and passing the material off as one's own creation.

Can you help me understand how reusing ones own thoughts, research and opinions is cheating?

Just wondering also, where do you teach?

Does your University state that one cannot use one's paper from one class in another class?

You might consider upgrading to unlimited messages...sometimes the company will even back date the upgrade so that it will cover you for the past month...elimanating your high bill. Verizon helped me out with that a little while back. I was interviewing for a new job and making a lot of phone calls from my car (while at work). If you talk for an hour straight (or more) on a daily basis, in addition to your normal use, it can really add up! Anyway, I called Verizon and told them that I would like to upgrade to a bigger plan and that I have been meaning to do it for awhile. Long story short, they back dated the upgrade, so instead of going over my minutes that past month, I was within the number allowed under my "current" plan. B)

hockeymom, does your school use turnitin.com? I know mine does and its such a scare. I dont even know if it works or it its just a scam to scare students away from cheating but I know if I have to turn it in to the site I wouldnt even consider cheating. Other classes that dont use it are quiet easy to cheat. I hate to admit it but me and my roommate both were in the same class and wrote virtually the same essay with the same references and since there are 30 TAs marking, the chances of getting caught and being expelled are very small.

My phone costs me about 20-30$ per 2 months or so as I'm on a pay as you go plan with Bell (Solo mobile). With that I get unlimited text messaging and unlimited internet access. Since I don't use my cell phone that often this plan suits me perfectly and I got the phone for my b-day so even better!!!
