Where will Shanny go?

Recommended Posts

http://www.nypost.com/sports/rangers/bway_...arry_brooks.htm

Wow...if this is true...The best thing is that he signed for less to come here. Don't see that too much

has learned that after Shanahan had visited Manhattan on Wednesday to meet with Ranger front-office and coaching personnel - a "Welcome Brendan Shanahan" message with a visual of Shanny wearing the Blueshirt went up on the Garden Seventh Avenue marquee to coincide with his visit - the Rangers increased their original $3.5M offer in order to signal their commitment to completing the deal.

Funny...Some fans were saying they saw that on the screen, but no one believed them!

I know that Larry Brooks has a pretty good rep for getting stuff right, but I hope he's wrong...Shanny in Montreal would be great.

Poor Bob, all his energy went on Shanny and now we are left with Mike Ribeiro, woop di doo.

I love it. He actually went to the rangers and told them that he wanted to play here. Put him on the second line with Immonen and on the PP with Jagr and watch the points collect. Finally a second scoring threat AND a right handed one to boot. Even better, it's a one year deal, so there won't be any long term cap damage if it doesn't pan out (a la every other Rangers free agent signing since 1997) good pickup.

The best part about this deal for the Rangers is the fact that its a one year deal. I'd have some major concerns about Shanny. First off, how good will he play if he isn't with Datsyuk or Zetterberg? I know the Rangers have a lot of talent up front, but it might not all work out the same. More importantly, which Shanny will show up this season? The Shanny from 06 who looked like he wanted to be there? Or the Shanny from 04 who was arguably the most inconsistant, error-prone Wings forward? Still, its not bad at all when you have a guy who plays shitty by all accounts, and still scores 25 goals on a deep Detroit team. This is definitely a good pick up for the Rangers, especially if they can afford it. I just hope for Rangers fans sake that they don't hope Shanny will score 40 goals on his own. He is still capable of it (last year proved that), with the right help from others.

Why's that? Who would go to Montreal when they can play in NYC...No offense.

I joke, but you cannot blame him.

I guess you have never been to the NY metro area

For your information, I've been to the NY metro area plenty of times. I think Montreal is a much bigger hockey city than NY, where Baseball, Basketball and Football are much bigger sports. But that's not my point.

I don't understand why he would sign for 1 year instead of two. According to a few papers here in Qc., the Habs were offering a 2 year deal to Shanny. I thought it would make more sens for him to sign for two years, not knowing what this season would give him. For a veteran like him, it would've made more sense to sign for two years.

I think he signed for 1 year because he see's it as a great price for his age and the love of the game more less. It's not like he needs the money. Why not have fun the last couple of years of your career. If it dosent work out; oh well on to another team. Great idea.

New York dosent even have a football team. He is talking about the area. New York is better than Montreal any day of the week. Don't get me wrong, Montreal is a great party city, but it is no New York.

Vapor, don't be an idiot. New York Giants, New York Jets, Meadowlands home field in NJ. You can see NYC from the parking lot or the upper deck.

On Shanny, maybe getting trashed in French speaking newspapers did not appeal to him should he not score 20 goals in the first 10 games. In NYC, Theo and I know the only problem for him will be the village idiot: Larry Brooks.

I like the way Shanny comes full circle and returns to NY metro area. He was originally #1 draft of NJ Devils. Oh wait a minute, thats NJ, so I must be wrong!

And my mother can see NY from her house, does that make her a New Yorker? We all know that they are not real NY teams. If the Jets had moved to the UWS, then they would have been a gotham team. The Bills have more NY blood than big blue or the jets jets jets.

And as reported, Jagr influenced him somewhat.

I don't get that at all really. They've never played together, they hardly spent time in the same confrence, and Jagr's good, but he's not Gretzky or Lemieux. I wouldn't be surprised if Jagr was talking to Shanny at his visit, like you see in alot of other sports, but I'd be surprised if he went there because of Jagr.

I still think this is a risky signing for NYR, not a bad one, just risky. It'll be interesting to see where he fits in on the team. What other UFAs did NYR add? Aaron Ward?

What's this mean for Sykora.

they also added matt cullen and re-signed karel rachunek, who played in russia last year.

I've heard both that they're signing sykora but not rucinsky, and vice versa. They'll still have room for the youngsters on the big club, and Shanny will help them to develop their game. He's a tried and true goal scorer - 17 seasons with 20-plus goals, and I think 10 with 30 plus, as well as 2 50-plus seasons.

I agree that it's a risky signing, but it's only for one year. I doubt he'll match his numbers from last year, but his presence and experience is worth it.

You wouldn't take Jagr on the Leafs in a f'n heartbeat? Tell the truth! You know he is top 2 in league. Thornton has Cheechoo to thank for MVP. You think Joltin' Joe would have won an MVP in Beantown with Glen Murray riding shotgun? Jagr is all-world, case closed. Any help 68 gets to put checkers on another player is win-win. Look at Staal in Lina, once Oil had to go after Brind'Amour. Staal woke up and delivered, as he had all playoffs long. Check the stats, boys.

The word is that a huge reason of why he joined here for less money and a short contract is not only the idea of playing in NYC...But Jagr really pushed it and talked to him, etc.

Sounds like you are suggesting he was a big part of the signing.

The risk is short term, but it's still a risk. 4 mill is alot of put out, but it could have a huge pay-off. Then there's the chemistry mixture as well. I think a large reason why the Rags did well last season, was because of the Czech connection. How will two, non-Euro players fit into the top 2 lines?

I don't think it's a bad signing. I'm just saying it's risky and it doesn't make sense that Shanny wanted to go to NYR to play with Jagr. Could be true, but it doesn't make alot of sense. I mean why not Crosby, Ovechkin, Thornton, etc...

I do love that Shanny turned down a better offer from the Habs though.

Also where in the shit did you idiots get the impression I said Jagr wasn't a good hockey player? Sure I'd take'em on the Leafs. Yes he's a top 5 player in the league, likely the best, but he's not Gretzky or Lemieux. I've never heard of people wanting to go somewhere to play with Jagr. They like that he's on their team, but he hasn't been motivation to get anyone except friends of his, which I can't see Shanny being.

I have to believe this played some part in the decision. I don't think we need to get into another major discussion about the merits of the town/media/fans but they have a hard time attracting free agents and there has to be a reason. At least we know why free agents won't go to Chicago, the organization sucks.

How can Shanny have trouble playing with Czechs? Excuse me, but have you looked at the hometowns of half the Red Wing line-up since Shanny was in MotorCity? Hello, McFly!! The guy has been in the NHL 15+ years. He is not Don Cherry, he can play with anybody!!

Shanahan not going to Montreal is rather easy once you connect the dots: Chelios!! I'm sure Chelly gave Shanny all the pluses and definitely the negatives of not being French in Montreal. Sorry to rain on everyone's parade. I don't know why I didn't figure this one out sooner myself.

You're having alot of issues with this aren't you?

I never said he will have issues with them being Czech, I was talking more to the style of play the entire top 2-3 lines the Rags had. He doesn't fit in. Looking at the Rags line-up before last season, the talent wasn't really too deep. It's why alot of Analysist had them projected to be near the bottom of the league. Cullen's style fits in better than Shanny. I'm a little curious to see how he'll step in and play. On the surface, he addresses a need. However he might not fit in with the overall style of play they had last season which made them successful.

The Shanny deal is a good pickup IMHO. I am worried about Sykora though. I have to admit, I like the little bugger.

Theo - Good signings, yes. But HELLO! Where is our puck carrying Dman!? Poti was the best we had, and he's on the Island now. That is STILL the area we need to improve on. Sandis decided to booze his way outta the role, so we need to fix it. Rosival just won't cut it, I'm sorry.

Leetch is UFA, no????

I don't recall him being a puck moving, Point Man on the PP kinda of guy. True, it's been a few years since I've seen him play since his NY Hatin ass fled to the home continent.

Hell no to Leetch...

Isn't that blasphemy coming from a Rangers fan? If Doug Gilmour wanted to come back and play I'd sign him in a heartbeat.

If Lindros wanted to sign here, I would be against that as well.

You'd be against it if he signed for what is rumored to be in TO (<1 mil?) Did he leave on really bad terms? I quit paying attention to him during his span in NY.

There is no reason for Lindros to play in NY, no matter the contract. Its a case of been there, done that. There are plenty of reasons for him to play in Toronto.
