points back is the amount of 'points' a team is behind the team in first in each division(al east, etc...). The First place team in each region gets intot the playoffs, with the 2nd place in each region going into the wildcard(one for the al and nl). and then the winner of each wildcard gets into the playoffs. A total of 8 teams make playoffs.

it only depends on wins/ losses

ex: 1st place is team A with a record for 10-5.. 2nd place team is B w/ a record of 5-10.

team b is 5 games back. that means that they will need to win 5 games and team A will need to lose 5 games and then they will have the same record.

I hope this is right.

And you do half games back for being down a game, but having a game in hand.

Say team X has a record of 49-39. Team Y has a record of 48-39. Team Y is a half a game behind team X because team X has won one more game, but team Y has a game in hand on them.

i would have said that too, but i forgot the specifics like who gets the .5 of a game, the team w/ the more games played or the other one

heres a better way of sying that:

division winners get in. the wildcard team is the next best team overall.

example (as of today 6/10)

AL

central- detroit 59-29 (home field through al championship)

east- boston 53-33

west- oakland or texas 45-43

wildcard- white sox 57-31 (2 games behind detroit)

NL

east- mets 53-36

west- san deigo 48-40

central- st.louis 47-39

wildcard- la dogers 46-42

tyr looking on mlb.com for a better explaination of the games back

Im sure theres a more correct formula for caluclating games back or not but heres how I figure it out.

Take the team in the lead and determine how many wins they have and then take the team you want to compare and see how many wins they have. Take the difference.

You then look at the losses of the first place team and then the team you want to compare. Take the difference.

Add the two differences together and divide by two, voila, youve got how many games back you are.

For Instance as of right now the Red Sox are 54-36 and the Blue Jays are 51-40.

54 (Red Sox Wins) minus 51 (Blue Jays Wins) = 3

40 (Blue Jays Losses) minus 36 (Red Sox Losses) = 4

7 divided by 2 = 3.5 therefore the Jays are 3.5 games back.

Each game you win brings you a .5 game closer and each game you lose brings you a .5 game back.

Hope that helps.

In that situation Team Y would be a half game back because Team X has already won their game while Team Y still has to do so putting them the .5 game back.
