How does this guy stay in the NHL?

Recommended Posts

I must admit I have never really followed they guys career. Offense is obviously not his forte'. Did I miss something?

"(Luke) Richardson has played in 1,312 NHL games during a 19-year career. He has 33 goals and 156 assists."

Well I would say he could lay out the hits. Now he's nothing more than an orange cone on the ice :D but I guess he must have some other qualities if teams keep giving him a contract...

That was awesome.

He was actually okay in Toronto for the role he played. He can't handle speedy talented forwards, but I don't expect a bottom pairing D-man making 500K to be able to. This should help the Lightning if they use him right. He was better in Toronto than he was in Columbus.

Actually (and I've said this beopfre) him and Ian White together workled well. A solid stay at home hitter and the Offensive guy. Complimented each other well. And, offensive or not, a young D-man could learn alot from Luke.

I thought he'd be staying in TO, but once they went out and started signing D, I guess that wasn't going to happen.

not everyone in the nhl has 500 goals and 700 assists. there are ppl who are more of enforcers and low key playeers they just keep flying under the rader.

Every time you stop a guy from scoring it helps your team as much as scoring at the other end. It just goes to show how playing a simple game can keep you around for a long time.

So true, my brother is an offensive, quick hands scorer -- tallys 2-3 goals a game on the team we play together, I on the other hand am a bigger, role playing defenseman and I do a lot to ensure that the rushing offense has as little chance for a shot as possible -- often times taking the play away from the offense.

Yet, every time we come home from a game my dad asks how many goals we scored, my brother gets to say 2 or 3 and smile and high five him and I get to say 0 and walk upstairs while they celebrate.

I don't care, really, just shows how much more there is to the game that so many people don't grasp.

Umm, off the top of my head that's like less than 2 goals and 7 assists per year. Not too many guys stay in the show with those numbers.

Ok, the first two are retired but are guys that were a big part of their teams. The rest of the guys I just want through and picked one off of each team and my ADD kicked in about halfway through the league. All of those guys fill a role and have done so for years without showing up on the scoresheet every night.

No way Chadd, you did not just bring up Berg. Yes, he doesn't put up points, but he certainly doesn't stop other teams from scoring them.

He's actually not that bad, Quinn just didn't use him properly. Then again, you could say that about almost anyone on the Leafs lately.

I'll give you that he isn't that bad, but he could just never be a Maple Leaf again. He is really fast for a big guy, and played well at the Olympics. Hell, he was drafted 8th overall, so he has potential. I just never thought he put it all together in the NHL. I bet he'll do well playing in Finland next season though.

3rd Overall- http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/nhl1995e.html

He's one of those guys who ALWAYS plays better for his country than for his club team. I was scratching my head to figure out how he is one of Finland's Top 6 D-men...he was barely one of the Leafs Top 6 D-men.

How can you compare a Beukaboom, Witt, and Cairns to Richardson? These three were, and are still great d-men. Richardson is an old pylon out there, who can easily be filled by any d man in the league.

The only guy who you can compare him too in the new NHL is Rathje, who is slower than sin out there and can't move
