Jonathon Toews is staying in school

...there aren't that many 18 year olds in the AHL.

Gotta be 19 for the "A". Not sure when the birthday cut off is. Speaking as a Habs fan....that's why Latendresse, Chipchura and Price weren't in Hamilton. Although Chipper came after his WHL playoffs ended.

Forgot about that rule as well, although Nicklas Bergfors did play in the AHL as an 18 year old last season ( http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdispla...p3?pid=00080702 ). Perhaps the 20 year old rule is something more specific towards CHL/NCAA players.

Off the top of my head, the only other guy I can think of in recent years that played in the AHL under the age of 20 was Rico Fata.

It's got to be dependant upon nationality because Tlusty (the Leafs first rounder this year) may end up on the Marlies.

I thought he was going to go play in the 'Q'? or is that just Frolik?

Tlusty is on the Soo's roster, which is OHL, unless I'm wrong.

900k or school?  Hmm..  After I graduate, I wonder how many years it will take to work and make up $900,000..

Were you a Top 5 pick in the NHL Entry Draft?

k thanks for playing.

Umm, just making my opinion if I was in his place.

Your welcome.

UND is a great progam. He can learn alot from staying. And now I get to watch him play live for the next year. I am excited for UND's chances this year.

I believe that Fata could play in the AHL at 20 as he started his CHL career as an underager (see Jason Spezza, John Tavares)

I almost never say this, but in this case I don't get why he would stay.  He'll only be a sophomore, so he'll have three more years before graduating.  Can anyone actually see him turning the NHL down twice more after this?  If he does decide to go to the NHL in the 07-08 season, what was the point of staying this year?  It isnt' like he is staying to graduate.

Can't agree more. What will he gain in school? There's nothing but distractions in college. One year in the AHL would be way more beneficial.

just think about what happened to Matt Leinhart at USC. he stayed for his senior year and lost in the national championship(college football). in his junior year he won the heisman(best college football player) and was pretty much garunteed #1 pick in the nfl draft. he lost, and got drafted at #10.

i know the situations are different becuase Towes is only a sophpmore next year, not a senior. but if he gets injured he may end up regreting his desicion.

much respect to both players for staying in school

Leinhart's only class his senior year was ballroom dancing. It isn't like he stayed for school, he stayed for the team.

It only applies to Canadians, not Americans or European players.

He obviously lost out on money but look at the talent on the Cardinals and compare that to the 49ers. There's more to a career than a rookie contract.
