Bure's number story?

Recommended Posts

I was reading online today about Pavel and if his shirt were ever retired in Vancouver what number they would use 10 or 96. That's interesting enough on its own but what is really bugging me is why did he change his number to that in the first place, i tried searching and didnt find much besides some one saying somthing about it being Valeri's 1st season. Anybody know?

He wanted to change it to the year he came over to the States, but they advised against that so he went with the year he became a citizen after he'd established himself in the NHL. Or something like that. Then it became a jinx and he started to get hurt a lot.

Hmm alright that helps I guess, but then why did he go back to 10? It just doesnt make a lot of sense to me.

I always thought that #10 was his preferred number, but he gave it up when Esa Tikkanen went to the Canucks for a couple of years. No idea why he chose #96, though.

Who was wearing 10 when he got to NYR? (he wore 9 didn't he?)..

Esa?

McCarthy I thought, but I bet Vapor or Theo are right behind me with the right answer.

Did you not read all the posts before you or something?

It appears that I missed that part. A thousand pardons.

heres the real answer as to why he changed his number to 96. in 1996 the canucks signed alex mogilny. a long time childhood friend and player. he felt that since a great player and friend was joining him in vancouver that they would win the cup that year. (he was mistaken) lol. all of that can be found in an issue of beckett magazine. a magazine for hockey card values. if you need the exact issue i have it. fyi im the biggest pavel bure fan that ever lived.

I'm still pissed that he wore 9. Not to mention that 9 was even available. Graves was the heart and soul of that team.

He asked Graves (who was still playing in SJ at the time) and Adam told him it was ok.

Graves should never have been sent to SJ in the first place, especially after he lost his kid. I know that Bure asked.

and JR is spot on. no way Graves would have said no, but IMO it shouldn't have even been an option for Bure.

He wore 12 for a while for CSKA, but there may have been a #10 on that team already I don't know. He wore 10 for national teams. He's never been too averse to changing I guess. I thought he changed his number to 96 because of Mogilny too.

It was a pre-season article in '95 or whatever year Mogilny came over in The Hockey News that had the citizenship story in it. Not sure if THN catalogues that stuff online or not.

I read in the "riddle of the russian rocket"

that Bure wanted to get nr. 96 from the beguinning of his NHL career in VAN

because:

he arrived in VAN at sept. the 6th so he wanted to get Nr . 96

Quinn told him the organization doesn´t want to give out such high nrs. So he took

nr. 10 like before in Russia.

Some seasons latter, as Mogilny signed in Van, he noticed that Mogilny got

a high nr. ,89 I think, so he went to Quinn and got 96.

He was injured several times with that nr. so he took nr. 10 again

Best Regards

(russian) Rocket

That's the story I heard, that and the Mogilny and him teaming up for a Cup in 96. Well, that and his insatiable appetite for speed, coke, sudafed...
