What NHL players use the spreadeagle?

Recommended Posts

Antoine Vermette does it non stop

I hadn't noticed him before. In this vid... the first goal has a move where you pass the puck to your feet and kick it up onto your stick; my daughter was taught that at camp the other week. I thought at the time that that's a move you won't use in a game. *edit - and apparently neither did he, that clip is from a skills competition!

I've never heard of it called the "spread eagle". I've always heard it referred to as a mohawk. It's a great way to transition forward/backwards-backwards/forwards and if you just do one leg and turn the foot perpendicular to the other, it really allows you to open up your hips. I can't get my feet to do it on dry land, let alone in ice skates.

I thought just about everyone does it. I usually do it alot when setting up on a 2 on 1 (or 0) heading towards the net (It squares your body up to receive a short, cross the crease pass) or when receiving a pass that is a little slow. It also works good when you are doing a moving give and go pass (it lets you turn to keep the player your passing back to in better position).

I'd bet most of you do it and not even notice.

To me, a mohawk is a straight-line move, and a spread-eagle is a curving move. Some guys spread-eagle and have their chest facing out of the curve, too.

Ulf Dahlen (Stars) did it, I think.

Mohawk turn is a transition from front to back/back to front. This appears as a cut move which you always stay forward.

I do it as a reaction, I think most NHLers do this when the situation calls for it.

I sometimes use the spread eagle ( I just call it a half circle turn) on ice.

I picked it up when I started roller blading in Grade 6 or 7.

I guess you need to be flexible and able to put pressure through your legs and ankles to keep your blades on the ice and in the proper alignment.

Imagine going around a circle.

Its all groin strength and a deep knee bend, and as mentioned earlier, a mohawk is a change in direction transition that has you facing the puck at all times. It's used primarily in break out situations.

lecavalier did it on his schooling breakaway wrap around on esche.

It adds a dimension of turning and facing forward... although it can set you up for a pretty good crunching.

I wouldn't really call it a move, it's just something natural that any high level skater is able to do.

If you record a game and go through the whole thing in slow motion, you'll probally see most of the guys open up at least once on a regroup and attack.
