There is a difference in beverages and food:

When you order "tea" in Canada it is ALWAYS served hot - if you actually WANT iced tea, that's what you order.

The first time a Canadian, traveling in the States, is asked if they want "sweet tea", they have absolutely no idea what that is. (ice tea with sugar).

A "burger and chips" in Canada means you'll get french fries on the side - in some parts of the States it'll be potato chips.

Carbonated sugar water otherwise know as Coke or Pepsi can be problematic too. In Canada it is "pop" and "soda" is specifically a soda water. Which resulted in a "twilight zone" experience trying to get a Coke at a burger stand in Pennsylvania:

Me: "What kind of pop do you have?"

Her: "What?

Me: "What kind of pop do you have?"

Her: "Huh?

Me: "What kind of pop do you have?"

Her: turns to another person - "She wants to know what kind of pop (as in DAD) I have???!!!"

Other person: "oh nooo, she means SODA!"

Her: "oh, do you want a soda?"

Me: "No, I don't want Soda, I want to know what types of pop you have"

Me & Her: stare at each other in complete puzzlement

We had a good laugh once we got it sorted out!!

Actually western PA uses pop too. I just order a Coke or Dr Pepper.

In PA the big one I notice is whenever someone's going somewhere it called "goin' down". "Whatcha' doin this weekend? Goin' down the shore?" And every ow is an ah (the PA dutch slang). It gets real bad down in Lancaster though.

In PA we mangle the English language in a larger number of ways that any other state I've ever visited. Between the PA dutch, Pittsburgh, West Jersey (Philly) and the nothern tier there are several different forms of "English" spoken.

My least favorites:

"A while" Mostly Lancaster area. Thrown on the end of every sentance, as in: I'll go sit down a while, go get those drinks a while, I need some tail a while etc...

Pittsburgh pronunciation:

Giant Eagle grocery store = Giant Iggle, y'uns, yinzer, etc... It makes my assplode :(

I'm pretty sure it's a NorCal thing, but around here the generic, all-purpose word is hella. It is literally tacked onto every adjective. People from outta the region come around here and look at us like we're hella stupid, but whatever.

so that's why my stupid friend says hella all of the f**kin time. i'll ask him if he's from norcal... which i doubt it <_<

Here in Ohio it's strictly "pop" with everyone I know no one calls it soda. Heres a site I found about how the name varies across the country I don't know how accurate or recent it is but I though it was kind of interesting. Pop Vs. Soda
