I just gotta pat myself on the back

A lot of MSH members know my story. I'm an adult hockey player who didn't start skating until I was 29 and have only been playing since I was 30 (I'm 32 now).

At 6'3" and 300 lbs (at my peak) I was though of as a tank on the ice - not very fast but tough to move. Most players would get out of my way when they saw me barreling along with my limited skating skills (who wants to take a full force hit from a guy who outweighs you by 100 lbs?).

In June, I decided that I was tired of not contributing enough on the ice and that I'd pretty much plateaued in my development because of my weight. Let's face it - I was a cube.

Now, I'm down to 247 lbs. My skating and overall speed has improved a lot and I am tied for first in assists on my team with 4 in 3 games.

I'm sure this post may come off as self indulgent to some but I just wanted to make a point that if you're an adult hockey player no matter how out of shape you are you can make changes that will help your conditioning and, in turn, your overall game.

Now, move along. Nothing to see here. ;)

Great job. This will help not just in hockey but in everyday life. Heart disease and diabetes are not the way any of us want to live out the "golden years" (not saying that you're there yet.)

Congrats. Being in shape is always a good thing, not to mention avoiding the pitfalls that come with being out of shape. I've been diabetic since 4 1/2 and it's no fun. I lost a good amount of weight since last December as well and I feel a lot better. I can't imagine not playing hockey. Anyways, keep it up.

Great job :)

Its amazing how much losing weight effects your game AND your life. Hell, I lost 10 lbs so far this season and I feel GREAT. I would love to be in your shoes.

I feel like it's Saturday morning and some actor should follow that up with:

"And that's........one to grow on."

that is FAR from self-indulgent... that's called results after hard work, and you deserve it. I'm 28 years old, and I've been skating for little less than a year now... I'm 5'11", 250-260 and I'm trying to slim up so I'm a lot quicker out there... I've been busting my ass in the gym, and trying to skate as much as I can during the week.

so thank you for the post, it gives some great inspiration.
