Trained with Zherdev today

Recommended Posts

Zherdev and his agent (Rolli Hedges) had some ice today in Ottawa and he was looking for a couple people to practice with so me and and 2 other players and one goalie got a call to go on with him. We ran through a bunch of drills (mostly stickhandling) and then played some 2 on 2. Unfortunatley he wasn't on my team. I skate with again tommorow morning. I'll try and get some pictures tommorow. I know there's a few Zherdev fans on the board so I thought I'd let you guys know. He's ridiculous by the way and can barely speak english at all. That being said he seemed pretty cool. He leaves the 9th for Columbus.

Considering he doesn't speak much english, unless his agent doubles as a sort of concierge, I think he's sleeping, oh so tenderly holding his hockey stick...

Gah!! Well at least he isn't in Russia still. Us CBJ fans were holding out hope he could clear US Immigration for the game last night and tonight.

Looks like fun..

Its kind of a bummer that hockey is virtually non-existant in Utah.. I doubt I will ever get an opprotunity like that.

man, that looks like a ton of fun, it must have been a great experience to play with a star like him. Personally I have been fortunate enough to play with Jeff May (drafted by the Red Wings) and he can do some amazing things with a puck, I can't imagine what kind of crazy stuff Zherdev does on the ice in practice

Did you kick it with him at all; was he a cool guy to chill with, and does he speak english well?

He pretty much doesn't speak any english at all. He understands like shoot and pass and all that, but not much beyond simple hockey words. The guy who ran the practices is another russian, ex NHL goalie Sasha something, he played for the Oilers, he was Tretiak's protege. I've known him from doing camps for awhile. He did all the translating. I hung out with Zherdev before and after the icetimes but Sasha was pretty keen on getting him to the gym. He's got good hands. He likes to go wide backahnd and flutter the puck in. He also shoots fivehole pretty much every shot. I'm proud to say i dangled him a couple times in 2 on 2 though, it was fun he'd get frustrated and say something in russian then dangle me next time he got the puck. At the end of the first day he went and did some extra skating and I was told to go push him and make him go harder, so we did a few tough laps. The second day was at goalie camp so we basically did one-timers and breakaway competitions all day while I was getting paid which was sweet.

He scored twice last night...the first one was less than 2 minutes into the game. I mean, talk about trying to win everyone back over and get off to a good start.

Think the Sasha guy you talk about works for the Blue Jackets in some capacity. He was basically Zherdev's babysitter last season...which is one reason why the club was hesitant to give him a big contract. But last night you could see that the negotiations lit a fire under him...Zherdev was around congratualting everyone on the ice, and actually looked like he said things to his teammates. Trying to be a team player, and heck, he even took exeption to the rough treatment a few Coyotes tried to give him, especially Mike Comrie.

Sasha lives in Ottawa so he's not the guy in Columbus who helps him out. Zherdev isn't a big guy nor is he in exceptional shape, he's actually pretty skinny and has a bit of a stomach on him. I know a lot of good players who have bodies like his. Whatever works for you I guess
