Proper Skate Fitting

Recommended Posts

Hard to say, are you buying your skates off the internet? I don't recommend it if you do because skate fitting is a long process.. it took me an hour to find out the perfect fit/skate/size for my feet

Thanks. That is great information. One more question. What is the size difference in length and width between a whole and a half size?

no problem... Puckmugger is amazing, he's got tons of articles/reviews on epinions. check them out, it's good reading

JR has a guide he wrote up (for a magazine i think?) with some fitting info that's not in puckmugger's, ie how to check that the skate is the right volume...maybe with some searching you can find that...

one thing that i try to look for when trying skates on - when i push my foot down into the skate, if it fits well i'll feel like my foot is being suctioned down into the skate. kind of hard to explain, but once you experience it you'll know exactly what i mean.

Too bad too much of his info is fiction.

well, for a beginner.. the skate fitting guide, stick buying guide.. they work. Some of his product reviews are 'iffy', I'll agree. Compiling reviews based on your lhs' returns/defects, or 'word of mouth' yes- it's questionable as heresy. And he's even been put on the spot in his epinions forums.

As a beginner.. the guides and helpful tips were useful.

I love how he reviewed Bauer XXX skates without ever wearing them...

what an idiot.

I have a chance to get a pair of the old vapor 10's off the internet real cheap. I've always been against buying skates off the internet but with these ones it's a bit different. My brother had a pair of the old 10's size 7.5 so i tried those on and they were too big, but i think a 7 would fit (thats the size on the internet). The 7.5's felt really comfy but i'm wondering if in the smaller size they would feel different (mainly just maybe too narrow i'm usually an E and these are a D). Any opinions will be greatly appreciated.

i almost could have sworn i was a 7.0 in CCM by trying on my buddies ccm prolite skate.

i winded up being a 6.5 in vector 6.0 and i would have never guessed that it would have been my size. The LHS was 200 bucks with free sharpening and heat molding, online is 189 so it's not too much of a difference. i would pay that ten bucks to get the correct size any day.

I'd try taking the footbed out of your brothers old Vapor 10s and standing on them. If there's barely any material sticking out at the end then a half size smaller may be the right size, but if there's a finger width of space or more you probably need an even smalller size. That'll help you determine the length. As far as the width goes if you're properly sized in Es in other skates you'll likely need EEs in Vapor 10s as they're pretty narrow skates. Perhaps the 7.5Ds feel comfortable because they're broken in and a size or more longer than they should be for your foot.

You HAVE to try on the skate to find any pressure points that may make a skate the wrong one for you.

Even with pressure points a skate can still be a good skate for that person, you can heat mold or punch the skate or be traditional and just wait.

I love a snug fit length-wise, so I wear skates that are around a half size smaller than conventional fitting methods suggest but I find my arch area kind of bulges out.. That is, the eyelets starting from the toe to the ankle are almost shaped like /\ if that makes any sense.

I'm thinking that means I need a higher volume boot, is that correct?

I used to skate on a pair of 7.0D Bauer Air90. I finally gave them up for a new pair of Bauer 8090's. The weird thing is that the 8090's are 7.5D and seem to fit perfect. How can that be?

My toes just touch the end when I am skating. These boots cannot be the same. To try to prove it, I took an insole out of both pairs of skates and put them together, and they are exactly the same size. Does this even sound right, a 7.0 and 7.5 with the same width and length?

So, just for the heck of it, I tried skating on my Air90's last weekend, and realized how bad they hurt my feet. I can't believe I skated in them for so long. I always wondering why my toes were all beat up after skating.

Is there such a thing as too tight?
