Check your battery connections. Same thing happened to me back in highschool taking a car offroad.

Chadd 916 Report post Posted October 29, 2006 The battery may very well be dead, but that doesn't mean that the battery is the problem.
tjl_48 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2006 The steering and the brakes shouldn't go away with a dead battery. I think it is more serious than that.
43%burnt 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2006 i dought its your battery. after a car is started, the battery has little to do with the functions of running the power in the car. the alternator does most of that work. that'd be the first place i'd look for something bad. or as said before, some electrical connection loose or out. your steering and brakes are power assisted and run off the engine or electrical. once the power is cut, you're basically running them manually; they'll feel harder to steer or slam on the brakes. BK 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2006 i dought its your battery. after a car is started, the battery has little to do with the functions of running the power?? Yes it does.. Power steering and Antilock brakes have EVERYTHING to do with your battery. When the OP said that his breaks, lights and steering went out, I doubt that he mean't that they just stopped working (turning the wheel and nothing happenening, hitting the breaks and getting no stoppage etc, there is nothing that could do that other than an alien car-death-ray or some other sci-fi device).after a car is started, the battery has little to do with the functions of running the power in the car. the alternator does most of that work.Wrong again. The alternator is what recharges the battery. You car runs off of the battery, not the alternator. Don't believe me? Turn on your engine and pull one of the connectors off.. your car will die within 10 seconds. The battery may very well be dead, but that doesn't mean that the battery is the problem. It MAY be dead, but batteries don't usually die on the go. The alternator keeps them charged enough to keep running. You are right though, it may be a bad wire or alternator. If the alternator goes, then its just a matter of letting the battery lose all of its charge then your car will just stop running like the op said.OP: What kind of road were you on? Did you go over any bumps? If you were just on a highway or something smooth like that, then the odd's are that your alternator is toast.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted October 29, 2006 Obviously you missed the part where he figured out what the problem was. JR: We need that pic of Chico again.
