Light protection shoulder pads

Recommended Posts

I'm not playing contact hockey any longer and I'm looking to get some light shoulder pads. I have an older pair of Christian "linebacker-style" pads that I don't want to wear. I've gone without for the last couple of summer seasons, but would like something to provide a bit of protection - and to help keep me warm ;) through the winter season. (that's a joke, so you know)

Any suggestions on what to look at out there?

The next best thing to wearing no shoulder pads at all:

Yup, I hate wearing shoulder pads and these things are great.

They offer some protection and are really low bulk. I've taken a couple of sticks and pucks wearing them and haven't had any issues.

You can even detatch the arm protection and just wear the chest portion if you wanted.

I've got a set - Feels like I'm wearing nothing at all. Nothing at all! Nothing at all!

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Shoulders/arms don't feel unprotected, but the my sides feel quite naked.

I bought the next model up a couple of years ago, for the same reason. The SP50s hadn't come out yet so these were the lightest. I also play in a non-check league, but playing defense means I still tend to get in the way of flying pucks. I like these as they are only a couple ounces heavier, but have more PE inserts. Still VERY light and comfy.

I have the sher-wood 5030s and they are a great light pad. I just switched from the nike v-12 last yr and I feel I'm alot more mobile now.

rather than buying a new set of minimalist pads (most of which don't have much in the way of chest protection), consider removing the shoulder caps from your current pads by cutting the stitching that connects the pad itself to the caps - IMO, that's the way to go in a non-check league. that way, you still have good chest protection in case you play with guys that can't keep shots down, but you don't feel bulky and immobile and look like a linebacker.

i have a pair of jofas that i'm saving in case i end up playing college club, but for adult league, i gave my sherwood 5030s away, and i usually don't wear any shoulders - when i do, i wear my modified itechs...

OK, since the topic is here, let me ask a question. The last poster said to remove the whole cap area, but how about opening up the covering and just taking the hard plastic out and adding something else in there. I have a pair of Jofa 9400 and I just dont like the "linebacker" bulk of the caps. I guess I would like to have a little padding up there for self protection, I'm mostly playing pick-up. I was just thinking of opening up the caps and taking out the plastic insert and maybe putting in something else for padding.

Any opnions???

i was looking for something really light myself-- those things look so fragile though.. i guess it doesnt matter too much if theres no checking.

They're actually not that bad protection wise. They have inserts in the front and back and the caps and bicep pads are decent.

The only protection issues I have are when I have my arm up and get caught underneath in the ribs.

I also took a shot in front of the net in the shoulder between the arm pad and the chest pad and that didn't feel too good but after that I adjusted the strap on the arm pads and there isn't anymore open space between the pads.

I've taken a couple of hits and many cross checks and I have no complaints.

I had these before I got the SP50's and loved them as well. Might be better if you want a little more protection that still isn't bulky.

Very light and low bulk but also provide decent protection. I bought the SP 50's for an open session I play in that tends to get a little rough. I liked them so much that I shelved the 4420's for them.

One unintended drawback of the SP50 that my beer league buddy relayed to me is that when you slip them on, they're so small and delicate that it looks like you're slipping on a piece of lingerie.

The downside of this is that the rest of the guys in the locker room will be sure to remind you of that every time you suit up! :D

I was also looking for a super light shoulder pad and I finally settled with Bauer 6000s. Very light and good padding. Feels like wearing nothing.

True, I got plenty of comments when I first got them but then a couple of other guys got them after they found how well they worked.

One of my team members wears them without the arm pads. Someone suggested that he was a lost member of the Village People and asked where is assless chaps were.

I cut the arm pads off my CCM 1052's but now that I have Tackla pants that have a higher top I need to find a smaller sholder. I think the SP50 may work for me. I wonder if they sell those at the Sportmart.

Probably a good bet. Plus you can get some pair of shoulders pretty cheap. I got some Bauer 300s..nice and light but big caps. You can chop it off and it'll be fine, plus it's only $20. But I kept the caps on to help fill out my jersey as I'm skinny :D

Stupid Sexy Flanders!!!!

I have Sherwood 5030's, and I even cut the caps off of them to make them even less bulky.

I was mostly looking for something to take the sting off in the event I got hit with a puck in front of the net.

Whats the lightest I could go playing contact hockey? I wanna try the sherwoods but Im worried If I get nailled id get hurt.

It's going to depend on your comfort level with contact and pain. I've taken plenty of hits and pucks in the chest with the 5030s and for me they're fine. I played high school hockey twenty years ago with pads not nearly as good as these. There's guys wearing pads with less protection in the NHL. But, if you have a history of shoulder injuries or think about getting hurt while you're playing, they're probably not for you.

Well the only time I ever really get rocked is when im on the power play and the dump it in deep and I go in behind the net and the guy on the penalty kill rocks me with the no icing lol but most of the time its not that bad. Im deffinitally considering picking up a pair of 5030s today before my game.

How about those torso shirts with the inlayed padding for inline - has anyone tried those for non-contact hockey? I don't want anything bulky for my non-contact, no slap-shot league, but I don't want to destroy my real pads because I wear them for contact.
