Putting blades into shafts multiple times

Recommended Posts

OK, so I have started playing with different blades, just to get a feel for what curves suit me best. So far its a mix of good lie/bad curve, or bad lie, good curve, but thats besides the point.

If I remove a blade, put in another, then change back, then put in a different one, does this affect the blade itself.

Basically, I am now putting in the same Jokinen blade for the third time. In between times I had a peca and a christian blade of some sort in.

Now, I am having trouble getting the Jokinen blade back in. I have taken most of the glue off, and I tried to get the inside of the shaft clean too. I can't see any lumps just sticking out.

Is there a reason that I would now be having trouble? I don't really want to just force it in, in case I break it or something, but obviously I need to get it sorted if I want to use it again.

Any advice would be appreciated, and yes, I know I am a dummy, but have not got much experience with the shaft/blade combo

I have never had any problems swapping the blade out multiple times. I had a Synergy II blade last year that I put into different shafts a couple times and tried different blades with the shafts also. I changed same bladed 5-6 times and had no issue. I had to put more glue on but that is normal. My only thought is that perhaps you overheated when changing and that affected the blade. However, the shaft might show burn marks if that was the case.

You were right not to force it in though. My friend did that and thought he heard a funny noise when he did it...he was right. First hard shot and snap!

Are these wood blades or composite?

Wood could swell if it's gotten wet - although it would be surprising to see the hosel swell.

Just a thought...

yeah, the only blades I every had trouble removing and reinstalling multiple times was the old Bauer blades with the little rubber hosel (instead of glue for me). After about a half dozen or more times the ruber was too worn to hold the blade in securely by itself.

The Jokinen shaft is composite. Thats what has me confused, I figured wood might expand with overheating (as I don't have much experience, that would have been easy to do), but its not.

I haven't heated the shaft, but I did try to scrape the inside to get rid of glue globs.

Do you think heating the shaft would help?

yes Gavin - heat the shaft to get it to expand slightly, and to loosen the glue blobs if they're in there.

Then stick some hot glue on the tenon, and insert into the warmed-up shaft!

I will try that tomorrow night.

I keep going back to that jokinen blade I got from you, really like it, I should just leave it in, but I am trying to try as many as I can in case I find something I like more.

So far the Jokinen is winning out ,although I like the Modano-forsburg curve I got on a cheap woody too, but still experimenting

I was able to get a cheap heat gun and have been swapping blades like crazy between a Red Lite and an Ultra Lite. No problems whatsoever.

yeah, that should fix the problem, I'm almost certain. Just try not to overheat the shaft. Good luck :)
