NEW YORK (CP) - The NHL will have a new look next season.

The league is set to unveil new uniforms at a news conference in mid-January.

The streamlined uniforms, designed by Reebok, will be worn by players at the Jan. 24 all-star game in Dallas. All players will wear the new uniforms starting next season. They feature increased flexibility and are less bulky than what players have traditionally worn for years.

"The new uniform design has been in development for more than three full years," Bernadette Mansur, senior vice-president of communications for the NHL, said Thursday. "The system will afford the players increased protection and facilitate peak performance on the ice."

The launch is tentatively scheduled for Jan. 17 in New York although details are still being formalized. Another news conference featuring the new uniforms will take place Jan. 22 in Dallas during the all-star week festivities.

The league and Reebok have been working with NHL players behind the scenes testing the new uniforms.

Let's hope they do a better job than Nike did during the Olympics. I was not a big fan of them....especially the first batch that were way too tight. And the socks...YUK!

Any insiders with pics??

Someone had posted pics of the New All Star jerseys a while back...they were very nice looking. Someone else posted other teams...but I'm not sure if they were official sketches or just mock ups/ideas from various users.

So, does Buffalo (who JUST re-designed) get new jerseys as well...?

"The system will afford the players increased protection and facilitate peak performance on the ice."

I wonder is meant by added protection?

Tighter jersey helps keep the pads where there supposed to be maybe?

Actually, I think someone on the forum (I think JR or maybe Chadd) said that the Buffalo jerseys are the newer type of jerseys. That's what I remember, and quite honestly, by looking at them, they jersey design (the tightness) doesn't look bad at all. The slug on the other hand... Don't get me started.

The article on the ESPN site says:

The new leg pads are designed to stay in place when a player moves and not ride up toward the waist.

"The players will have the ability to have their joints flex and be able to move their arms and legs better than ever before," Bettman said.

This makes it sound like more than just new unis.

Will the jersey's still look the same? Like will some of the classic jersey's (Detroit, Montreal, etc..) still look the same?

I've heard an (unsubstantiated) rumour that the jerseys will all follow the same "template" and that only the colours and logos of every team will be different. If true its the worst decision in sports/marketing history.

...and my New Kaberle jersey becomes useless again :(

WHY DOES THAT ALWAYS HAPPEN!?!?!? First Berard, then Roberts, now the Kaberle and he didn't even Leave Toronto :(

Here's the thread I was speaking of earlier...

Not sure if those are official...or just artist renderings...

Wanna hear a good one...I got a Blue Jays jersey...lettered with Lyle Overbay #35...they DAY I picked it up is the DAY they signed Frank Thomas...he wears #35 *DAMN IT!*

It is a 30th anniversary jersey with the special patch, so Overbay had that number in that year.

The Sabres jersey is a different cut than what everyone else in the league has. I don't think it is the same as what they are talking about though. Who knows.

I don't mind the fit of the Sabres jersey's but if every single team has the same jersey design they will have gone too far with this. The classic jersey's are classic for a reason, people have grown up with them. I understand that the NHL wants to get new fans but making every team look the same is a crime. I know its hockey and its about the game and skill on the ice and not about how players look. The NHL is an entertainment business and having every team with the same look isn't entertaining at all.

Yes...it will be a new pant that will integrate with the jersey. And guess who's making it? ;)

A jock tag is the sizing tag on the bottom of the jersey, in the front.

That will most likely be on the retail ones - doesn't make sense for the pros because they're going to wear them untucked for the most part.

That is the same cut as the Sabres' jerseys...at least the piping and the shoulders/neck. Haven't seen a Sabres pro jersey in person so not sure if it does have a droptail (like Nashville's third)

Ohhhhhh....I was thinking it was jock-jock related. They really should call it something else.

Funny how the GMs voted it down last year but had no choice this year. RBK wanted to require that only their pants are used, I can't believe that the NHLPA will permit that.

They were pressing a new uniform "system". Buffalo is a very good example, they want the design on the jersey to work with the design on the pants. Considering most of the RBK pros don't wear the retail 8K pant and the new pant is somewhat similar in design, I believe the PA will not be happy. It also limits player endorsement options and that is another reason I think there will be problems.

So, the classic red/white striped Montreal pants might change too? :o

What about the Rangers...they have that great striping on their pants...Tampa with the bolt on the side...
