All Torhs Team 0 Report post Posted December 11, 2006 Its true that if a Zamboni runs over a puck while its actually resurfacing, it will screw it up pretty badly right? Ok so then I'm watching this guy do the ice before our game and he is actually resurfacing it, doing the laps. So he has like four guys standing in his zam doors throwing pucks out in front of him. He his weaving the pucks as they come. He was pretty good at dodging the pucks too. The Zam guy was laughing and having a good time too. So why did they risk this? Ruin a zamboni? All I can think of is it would be a game that they all played to see how many they all could dodge.
UMWhockey 0 Report post Posted December 11, 2006 It can ruin the auger or the blade depending on where it hits. I will go out on a limb and say that about 80% of the people that drive a resurfacer don't have any clue how it works or how expensive it is. I was doing the ice for the Norfolk Admirals one time and a fan threw a towel in front of our zam and it jammed up the vertical auger really bad. took us about an hour and a half to fix it. Now think if your local rink, who might not have anyone on staff who can deal with a situation like that has something happen to the zam. Might mean the rink has to cancel the rest of the schedule if they don't have another zam. What I say is just leave the zam driver alone and listen to what he says. The more careful the better since you can't have a decent sheet of ice without a resurfacer
dix0r 0 Report post Posted December 11, 2006 had a kid knock a water bottle off the boards and directly under the conditioner yesterday during my first lap. no possible way to avoid it - had it been a split second later it would have hit the top and perhaps not gone underneath, but unfortunately, he timed it just perfectly. after a half-hours worth of work, he got a chewed up top and straw back. other kids were complaining about not getting an ice cut. that team is full of spoiled kids
Dante2004 0 Report post Posted December 11, 2006 How to ruin one? Well, this wasn't on purpose, but my first day on the job I hear a horror story about how the "last guy" screwed up the machine. He was about doing his outside lap (with the zam doors still open) and when he passed by the opening, he didn't move far enough over (still letting the front roller turn the machine through the corner). The front cleared the opening but the conditioner hit the far side of the opening and got caught in the board. The entire conditioner bent back and the machine was stuck. Keep in mind that the water controls are vertical direct drive rods that go from the driving area down to the conditioner. These also bent making it impossible to turn the water flow off. Now the machine is "stuck" to the board, the conditioner is bent back (exposing the blade), the water is on and couldn't be turned off. The entire water tank drained in that spot and the rink manager had to car a tow truck (to use the hoist) to remove the machine. The boards were all jacked up and the ice on that end of the rink was all jacked up.This is what I was told when they were expressing how important it was to "be careful". They could have just said "be careful". :-) I was sooo nervous when I did my first solo cut.
JR Boucicaut 3802 Report post Posted December 11, 2006 One of the assistant mgrs at the rink got 4 pucks stuck in the auger last week. The next day, he comes to work and finds 4 chewed-up pucks on his desk.
jjtt99 0 Report post Posted December 11, 2006 I know it's all about the "Zamboni" whether that actual brand of ice resurfacer is used or not. I'm just wondering if anyone uses an Olympia. It's funny because the Canucks play in General Motors Place, and in view of this, Olympias have to be used because they're built on a GM chassis whereas the Zamboni uses a Ford!I'm guessing Zamboni has a huge market share. Just wondering if anyone uses the alternative.http://www.zamboni.com/ vs. http://www.resurfice.com/
UMWhockey 0 Report post Posted December 11, 2006 I have used both.... i loved my zamboni 552 electric though.

rogue 0 Report post Posted December 11, 2006 The rink I play at has an Olympia. A few weeks ago they put up new signs that said "There are to be no players, coaches or pucks on the ice while the Olympia is out there"Just struck me as funny that they were using in the same generic way Zamboni is used. (Just like no one asks for a "Puffs" its either tissue or Kleenex)
--notorious 0 Report post Posted December 13, 2006 What's the "correct" way to call a zamboni. Ice Resurfacer?
rogue 0 Report post Posted December 13, 2006 Yeah, ice resurfacer would be "correct". I don't care who its made by, to me it is always a Zamboni.
