A real dumbass question about taping the butt end of

Recommended Posts

OK, this is going to sound both retarded and vain, but I am not trying to be either.

So, the wood sticks I had been using were 60 inch sticks. I am 6'3'' so this is a good length for me.

I have been using a shaft/blade combo recently, trying out some blades. Anyway, I had a 4" end plug in it (wood plug). The stick was a too short, it was great practicing stickhandling on the floor in my feet/shoes, but not in skates.

So I bought a couple of 8 inch plugs on e-bay.

Now, with a plug this length, should I tape right down to where it meets the shaft?

Is that common, is it required, or is it all personal preference?

I haven't got them yet, so have not tried anything.

Again, sorry for sounding stupid, but was just hoping for a little advice, also, if there is some inane rule that says the stick/end point must be covered, or something.

Cheers

I'd say personal pref. However far down the shaft you would tape before...I see no reason why you'd have to change that (superstitious lot that we are). I usually tape about 6" down the shaft, whether I have an end plug or not...but I haven't had to use an 8" plug...usually 3-4" is enough for my height.

I've had shafts that have cracked about an 3-4 inches from the end and to salvage the shaft, I inserted a longer end plug. I normall tape the end to cover the end plug, so that it looks aesthetically better. its personally pref

If I have an end plug I tape the entire plug and 2-3" inches down the shaft. No plug I make a knob and tape 2-3" below that... I just can't stand the look of a wood plug inside a composite shaft, it's got to be covered by tape, white tape. But like always it's personal preference.

I have the same plugs and have quite a bit of wood showing after my grip. I also Bruce Driver the handle and will tape farther down only if I didn't get it smooth enough.

I would tape about an inch or two over the wood/shaft joint. I have seen to many shafts seperate or get loose and wobbly from blades or plugs. Nothing worse than trying to use a stick that feels funny. I even tape the blade shaft joint...it really makes you look like a dolt when you take a shot and the blade goes farther than the puck.
