Great car for the money, but make sure the maintenance is up to date.

The belts, wheel bearings, ignition coil, and wiring will need replacement if not done already. Audi maintenance is a bitch at $110+ an hour, so expect to be spending around $1,000 a trip to the shop. All the B5 Audi's(96-2001) will need some type of work done soon and mostly likely, often.

The 2.6 V6 has quite a bit of pep, while the 1.8turbo is weak. I'd opt for the 2.6 if you can find one. The turbo will need replacement soon and is slower..it does get a little better gas mileage. Audi's Quattro 4wd is so famous for a reason, and the interior is typical audi quality...great. The only problem with the interior is that the LEDs will most likely die on the heat screen.

I'd stay away from anything with 70,000+ miles, but thats just me. Every car seems to develop problems at that mileage, and German built cars are more expensive to maintain than a japanese car.

If you can wing it, i'd go with something more expensive and reliable. The Audi's are a steal for the money, but you'll be paying for it when it goes to the shop.

Goodluck.

We had a 97 A4 for a bunch of years and it was not bad, but like Thockey mentioned absurdly expensive to maintain. Acceleration wasn't great, but his RS6 was pretty rediculous for acceleration and speed for such a heavy car, wish he kept it.

Why do you want to buy an Audi? Or why do mommy and daddy want to buy you an Audi? Because the have nice interiors? Because they are fast? If you earned the money for the car do not waste it on a pile of shit like an Audi. I work at a very reputable auto repair shop (AAA,BBB,ASE,ASEM...) and I see this all day- look at something else. And for God's sakes, don't get a Ford. Audis are nice when you when they run, but they are a bitch to repair and cost too much in labor. Plus they have interference engines. As Thockey17 said, minus the wheel bearings (they can just be repacked) add in the power steering rack and pressure hoses along with the pump- those wil shit out if they have not already. Usually right around the 65k-67k miles. If you have more Q's just ask.

LOL Wow that was funny. I am buying the car on my own, with my own savings. What about Saabs?

Whats a good luxurious reliable sedan? Again it has to be ~5-10k so I want the best I can ge tfor that price range

I find it funny that everyones having such horror stories about Audis, if you do basic maintance they will last a long time, a buddy of mine has a 1.8T A4 from like 99 and it has over 200000 miles on it and it runs mint, he did have to replace the turbo but with that kinda mileage that is kind of expected, and I test drove a A4 with the 2.8 V6 that had 145K on the clock and the car ran smooth handled nicely and drove like a charm.

You'll see so many horror stories because Audi's arent exactly the best built cars on the road. I had an '01 S4 for a couple of months, and the thing had non stop problems, even under factory warranty. It was in the shop almost every other month needing something replaced or changed. This was a car that had every single scheduled maintenance and was not driven daily, modded, or raced by the previous owner.

Audi's are great cars, but you have to know what you're getting into. With the price range he's looking at, you're going to find a car with either a ton of miles or has been driven hard and no warranty. The B5's are notorious for engine and wiring problems. Dealing with the turbo, you're just asking for more.

For a first car, everyone wants something nice...i know. Chances are it will get beaten up in parking lots, or even in an accident. I dont know about anyone else, but for a first car i'd go with the most reliable thing i could find and save money for a nice® car. My Civic Si treated me incredible until i could afford something better.
