Ovechkin forced to change visor

Actually the saying goes, "Offense wins games but defense wins championships."

I still believe if the season would've started on time that year they wouldn't have won. Guys were not in shape as the season started in January. As the saying goes, anything can happen in a short series...er...season.

I was close enough. :P

Eazy, I don't agree. It wasn't the weakness, until a team knew how to use it.

I'm saying it's based on interference, hooks, holds, and slowing players up which is illegal. Had the NHL called this then Jersey wouldn't have been anywhere near successful. Good of Jersey to identify the non-calls and use it to their advantage. They are starting to do it now as well. Benefits them alot, but really screws around with the system. Much like Lou's off-season moves. He's really great at kicking around the NHL to benefit his team.

The older trap was less hooks, holds and slow ups and more clogging zones by holding ice and causing turn-overs which you quickly turned up ice. The trap from the 80s and even earlier, that came over from Sweeden.

I see what your saying, but I am pretty sure it was the Wild who tried to use the trap like the Devils. But they didn't do it right, as a result they got no where. The devils don't have the trap right now, and they're 3rd in the conference, and 1st in their division(although a weak division). So they still can be successful without the trap.

More skill?

I think a good AAA Midget Player, or a good Jr.A Player could make the N.H.L way back in the early 1930s. Granted he would get to use all of the new equitment

Alot of teams implemented it like the Devils and the Wild were successful with it. Take a look at their run in '02 (maybe '03). The difference is they are an expansion team and have very little talent. They did it "right" they just have a back-up goalie and 1 goal scorer.

The Devils trap right now, and I think you'd be aware of this being a fan. They don't hook as much, but they slow up players on a regular basis and pull and incredible amount of interference. Lou's done great at teaching them to play around the rules he helped make.

You do realize that Jacques Lemaire coaches the Wild, right?

The Devils never stopped.

Like I said, having this discussion with a Devils fan is pointless.

They have always at least been able to score so it's not like the early Wild, Panther eras where they used it solely as a crutch.

I am aware that they trap right now. I should have been more specific in my post. I meant that they don't trap the same way as before. They had to stop some of the holdups, and such with the new rules.

JR- Yes, I do relize he coaches the wild, althugh haven't seen them play in a while due to the schedule and can't get the west conference games on tv.

They all work or it wouldn't be as widely used. The difference is Jersey is completely committed to it. They draft their players to fit it and they've been doing it for over 10 years now. Most teams use it to compete when they don't have the talent. Jersey's got it through most of their systems and prefer to draft from teams that use it.
