Computer Mouse Question

Recommended Posts

What are the computer mice(?) with the little ball on the bottom called? They are really annoying since the precision is horrible, and the movement is vey choppy. Does anyone know what the kind which uses the light on bottom to detect motion is called? I have the kind with the ball on the bottom and can't take it anymore, I'm so close to smashing it. On the bottom of my current retarded mouse, it says:Belkin F8E812, and then underneath it it says S/N 065002520, in case anyone was wondering

Thanks Guys

he doesnt want an optical because they're shit. Get a laser mouse i think they range from 30-60 depending on the brand and if its cordless

optical mouses work perfectly fine

optical mice are fine, laser mouse is a waste of money, what do you work for logitech or something?

you don't need insane precision unless you're a hardcore gamer or graphic designer.

thats the one i have i love it but the wire can get in the way of gaming pretty expensive but thats CDN

You obviously have no clue what you are talking about. According to you Logitech and Razer make shit mice. However since you are such a hardcore gamer you'd know that's exactly the opposite of true.

If optical mice are so shitty why are laser mice better? Because the saleman at Best Buy told you that? Guess what, laser mice use the exact same technology as optical mice except they use a different light source. What does this mean for 90% of people? Laser mice can be used on more surfaces without a mouse pad then optical.

Connor, get an optical mouse, you will have much better results. I recommend anything from Microsoft or Logitech. Some have extra side buttons which can be used to navigate forward and back on webpages (among other things) and are definately worth it if you want to spend a little bit more.

I just liked laser better because the opticals i had used didnt work that well, i don't know if the ones i was using were bad because of them being old or overused but mine and all my friends aren't that great, from my experience anyway guess you proved me wrong. No need to get offended, im just speaking from my experiences and the laser i have i think is way better than the opticals i've used

Were you using the opticals without mouse pads? I've noticed that many desk surfaces don't agree with opticals and will cause skipping. It's almost always fixed with a mouse pad which provides more texture for the sensor to pick up. That's the one advantage laser mice have (had to use a mouse pad on my dorm desk w/ an optical, don't have to with the laser).

Most likely due to the varnish or glaze on the desktop surface.

Optical mice can't handle overly rough or slightly reflective surfaces.

Laser I think will work padless on a glass table, but who is classy enough for that here?

No its jsut that the opticals me and my friends have and the ones they got with they comp and alot of them seemed to needed to be replaced.Alot of them were choppy like the topic starter said. I have about 3 or 4 opticals laying around my house that dont work/

Here's a little bit clearer explanation of why they both work of the same technology:

Inside the mouse is a very small image sensor, a scaled down version of a digital camera. This sensor records what the surface of the desk looks like. However since your mouse is covering the desktop there is no light there so it can't see anything. An optical mouse works by having a small red LED light inside it. This light shines on the surface of your desk. This allows the image sensor to see the texture and increases the contrast which allows more accuracy. The mouse detects movements by taking many images per second of the desk surface and comparing one to the next. That is why with lower end mice, if you move them really fast they will get screwed up, your movement is covering more distance then one frame shows.

Why are optical and laser mice essentially the same technology? Because laser mice also use an image sensor and a light source. The difference is laser mice use a laser instead of an LED. Because of the characteristics of a laser such as a beam that doesn't spread out and lower wavelength laser mice can pick up finer details in the surface and thus can track on smoother surfaces and can do so more accurately. If it were possible to have a flawlessly smooth surface it would be impossible for any mouse no matter the quality or technology to be used on it. In the vast majority of cases a person would not be able to tell the difference between a laser mouse and an optical mouse. The only common situation would be if they were using it on a surface that was too smooth for an optical but rough enough for a laser.

Turn the mouse over. There are two things to look for. Do you see a bright red light? If yes it is probably an optical. The only laser mice I've used are Logitech and the laser they use is very difficult to see and is only a small pin point. An optical will look like a small red flashlight is shining on your desk if you pick it up about half an inch.

The other thing to look for is on the label on the bottom, if it is laser it will say "Class 1 Laser product"

If all else fails post the model number (found on the label on the bottom) or find a picture and I can tell you.
