Paul Stastny of the AVs was not selected for the young guns game, why do you think he was overlooked? Is it because he's not a marketable enough name? He currently sits third in rookie points behind Malkin and Kopitar, and teammate Wolski was selected who is in fourth for rookie points. So why do you think he should or should not have been?

I think it's just because the Avs already have Wolski and Budaj in the game. The league probably wants players from as many teams as possible. He does deserve it though.

they also forgot Latendresse

As much as I would have loved to see Gui in the game...I don't know if his style lends itself to that type of exhibition game. He's more of a power forward....dig, drive the net...bull through people. He has skill...don't get me wrong, but when you see the guys that made it...Kopitar/Malkin/Wolski...they are more true skill/scorer type players.

I could easily see Grabovksi or Kostitysn representing the Habs at the young guns game next year...if one of them makes the team out of camp.

The only problem with that reasoning is that Pittsburgh has three players in it with Malkin, Christensen and Staal. That's why I asked if people think he's just not as marketable a face/name as some of the others or if he simply plays such a low-key game while racking up points that he was overlooked?

In hockey circles the Statsny name is pretty well respected, so I don't think it has to do with marketability. I think it just has to do the divisions, and the north west got the short straw.

NW= 3

CEN= 4

PAC= 4

An interesting term "hockey circles". Any body who regularly follows the sport and has watched him play a couple of games knows he's good. The bigger market here is all the non-hockey viewing audience that a lot of the marketing hype going behind players like Crosby. As has been discussed in other threads, it really seems Bettman is trying to take a 20 yr old page out of the NBA marketing handbook with heavily promoting a few supreme young talents to revitalize the game commercially and increase the viewer base. That was the marketability I was referring to.

I think he's talking about his father and his name recognition moreso than The Avs forwards play.

Right, so that means what to the average sports fan that Hockey is trying to pull in? That's my point here, is this a calculated marketing move for Bettman and the NHL doing their best to make sure the most "exciting" players are showcased or has Stastny legitimately just been overlooked in error because he is a low-key player that is always in the right place, right time making the good plays but playing around bigger names at the moment?

I definetly think he should've made it. I dont think it should be about what kinda player you are, or what kind of "marketing" your name will produce, I dont think it should be about divisions or teams. I think they should take the top how many ever forwards in points (for rookies) and defence from each conference. Goalies take the best GAA, SV%.. as an example. Who cares if you have 6 players from say...the Penguins in a few years because they've had the #1 draft pick for a few years (just an example, not hating on the penguins)

Those aren't always the best players. Especially the defense. The stats don't always tell the whole story. There's always going to be mistakes in selection, and I think doing it based purely on stats is a bigger mistake.

The Youngstars game is a joke, it should have been a one time thing. Kovalchuk scoring 5 goals in spectacular fasion in his rookie season is all i'll remember about the game.

.....What? The youngstars game is a joke? Espically with the NHL now favoring the youth, its a great idea. Some will say "well its good because it gets their names out there to people who arent big hockey fans..." But really I like it because its fun to watch theese young guys who have a hell of a lot of talent. There are a few who you could even make a decent case for them to be in the actual All-Star game. The youngstars game is far from a joke.
