VECTOR Skate lock durability?

Recommended Posts

I have locked my laces at least 250 times in the past 15 months, and everything is fine with my Vector's pro.

I also have had no problems what so ever. I wore the hell outta my Vector Pros, not anything close to a problem. Same thing with my 9k's, running strong. Not one thing to raise any concern. Completely unrelated to them breaking, I do make sure I tighten them up every once in awhile, but as far as performance, I love 'em.

i got vector pros in the beginning of the season, like july or so and lately i have had some problem with the lock. I tried tightening them but they seem to loosen up consistently. I really love the skate lock and cal feel a difference, but i wish they could clean it up a little bit. It ruins laces by twisting them all over and they seem to freeze up and lock down sometimes when taking skates off.

They've worked great on my Vector Pros. The key is not to tug on the ring when you are tightening your skates. Pull the lace through the ring straight out to the sides and then pull across the rings to lock them in place.

I took them off my 9k's, hated them. Whenever I used it my feet hurt really bad and I had to wear my skates really loose. When I don't use it and tie them normally they feel great. Just PP i guess.

That is probably because you were making them too tight below the lace lock. The idea of the lock is that the laces below it will stay pretty much as originally tied. If you wrenched too tight, your feet will hurt as the laces won't give during your skate.

I have a new ring coming in today - I will probably change it then trade the skates in - taking a loss, but the pair I have don't seem very durable for a $300 skate - the plastic trim has cracked on the tongue due, I would imagine, to my having skated in them outdoors in some cold temps, but if you can't wear a pair of skates outdoors for having them go to pieces on you, then they aren't the skate for me.

Maybe you could put a tiny dab of loctite on the screw to keep it in there? I was going to suggest Krazy Glue, but if you need to replace the lock itself later, you won't be able to do so.

I'm glad to hear that because I have never had any problems with CCM skates before, but this pair I have seems to be falling apart - not just the locks.

Again no kinda problem there. Both the Vector's when I had them and now the 9k's have been out on the lake extensively and have been a champ.

I had vector 6's and never had a problem with the skate locks for a little under 2 years of playing 4 times a week year round. The pieces of plastic on the front part of the boot however, those things fell apart and rendered the boot near useless. The rivets didn't hold up to well either, had to have them replaced before a year.

I love those skate locks though.

I just replaced the broken one and took them out for a trial - no probs so far, but I kept the wax laces in this time (I put wax laces in after the ring broke at a game last Saturday). I figure the wax laces will allow me to tighten where I want and not have to put too much back pressure on the locks, which should increase their longevity...I hope. Tib, I don't know what kinda temps you had on the lake...I was out in -20c the past few nights with them, for a point of reference.

I do as AnthonyJTa and others here suggest, pull the laces to the side, not straight up when going thru the lace locks. I have had no problem with my 5K's using yellow Graf laces that can grab and hold as tight as you want. I found that pulling to the side, then up to lock is also better for getting the right amount of tension.

I've had the skates since last November, skating them at least 2x per week.

yes sir, and when I tighten the cross at the lace-lock.. I actually pull them tight behind, not to the side - and then grab tight with my thumb and then lock them.

when I loosen, I go the top 3 eyelets as normal, and then start with the laces at 90 degree angles, and the pull lightly away from the lock.

...I literally watched a guy in my pickup hour grab his laces, and just tear away at them (His foot was cramped to all hell)..... as he pulled, the D-ring from the lace lock popped off, and about 2 guys over.

I don't doubt it can happen...

Can't remember how the weather was. Cold, but definately not that cold.

Never had problems with the skatelock on my 5ks. I have played on them for about 1 year, 3 times (or more) a week.

I feel they are a very useful tool.

I have the Vector 7.0 for three seasons and now the Vector 10 for about 2/3 of a season. Have not had any problems with the locks, skating 4-5 times a week. Replaced one lock on my 7.0 when it got hit with a slap shot and the plastic broke.

I have seen guys lacing up and when they get to the locks they pull on them as hard as they can before they lock down the lower laces. I mean they grab the laces, push the skate as far away from them as they can with the laces wraped around each hand and pull as hard as they can. As said before this ruins the locks.

I popped one off not too long ago. After about 8 months of use 2ish times a week. Just went down the the LHS and got a couple from the shop. Just takes a quick screw job to replace them, and provided you dont get the Hulk to lace your skates, they should be fine.
