Blade or steel

Recommended Posts

My friend has Graf 735 and he keeps loosing edge on the inside right foot. He has had several shrapens and an increased his hollow but it still happens. Is it the sharpening or could it be bad steel? Any thoughts

Thanks Sid.

weak ankles! probably the most probabal diagnosis, orrr he ties his skates tooo lose. also verry possible. if the issue is the former, may i suggest some balance ball/ board/ bosu training. google it. for the second, TIE UP YOUR SKATES TIGHTER! be sure to use all islets. skates were designed by intelligent people. they were made to be used in a specific way, especially more modern modles. can you say alliteration?

cheers

i think he was asking about the steel, not the skate being made bad.

whats and islet?

whats skates did he used to use?

is this a new problem w/new skates?

or did he wear them before the problem started

"islet" is proper english for the holes you put your laces through on your skate uppers. chances are, if it isnt a shitty, off center sharpening job, then it has something to do with the foot/ skater/ boot. not the steel at all. see previous post

An islet is a small island.

When it comes to skates, they are eyelets.

And I would appreciate it if you were to calm down and not bash members, especially when your first post is full of grammatical errors.

He is a very strong skater. He always seems to loose his edge about a skate or two later. It is always the inside right edge. It has happened several times after several sharpenings and a deeper hollow added. It is like he can't keep the edge on the side??

that was deff not my first post. you may remember me from such interesting threads involving talk of custom graf skates and t-flex sticks, as well as a large variety of posts on corebeam in its day... anywhoo enough defending myself.. how does he lace his skates? look at the bottom of his blades, check to see if the hollow is centered. i still say he has weak ankles or skates weird.

He likes it with lots of bite but it seems as if that edge can not get sharp or stay sharp. Is this because of how it is sharpened?

I said first post as in this thread.

Now, it could very well be that the blades are not square when they are sharpened.

There are too many factors that we cannot assess the problem. We haven't seen the quality of sharpening, we haven't seen him skate. My money is on the sharpening not being square.

This sharpening was done at a blademaster store and one of the best shops in Toronto which has me concerned.

ppl dont realize sometimes that their sharpening jig does not come centered stock, it takes alot of fiddling around to make the jig and skate hit the wheel at the right place, thus centering the sharpening.

Well there isnt a Blademaster store that store your referring to does use them but again it could just be a bad runner or one thing I have found lately is people using a Sweet stick to sharpen there skates. Now when you do this if you dont cross grind the skate before sharpening you sometimes dont put the edge back on the skate.

Anyhow I would ask to see the gauge after there done just to double check that part. Also what guy sharpened them there that can make a diffrence as well.

How can any of us who sharpen skates 24/7 tell what the problem is without seeing the skates? There are too many variables to get a correct answer and solution to your problem without seeing the skates. Make an appointment with OTG in Toronto to solve the problem.

Depends on the damage and what the blade heights are at before sharpening.

I used to work at the shop you took them to most of the guys are pretty good there.

I consider it our curse and it is a shared experience.
