Cold Sticks

Recommended Posts

Is there anything wrong with leaving my sticks out in the cold car, and then using them right away? Or if I do, will it affect its feel? I have 2 vapor XXX lites, and its been cold as hell the last 24 hours.

Well, theoretically, if water was to get into any slight cracks/fissers then one could say you'd run the risk of it freezing and, since water expands, causing the crack to worsen.

In general, it's probably a bad idea to leave exposed to any "extreme" temp extremity one way or the other (for instance, leaving in the heat in Texas).

Of course, one would think that graphite is far more durable to this than wood (where heat would warp sometimes). But the hot melt glue used on shafts/blades can get brittle if it's left in the cold for too long.

Just my two cents. Don't know if this holds water or not as I am just theorizing here.

We had some guys on the team that left all the gear in the car ... freezing weather ... come out first shift shoot and stick snapped. I have seen it happen also to roller hockey pucks, and wheels. I have only seen a stick snap once but I cannot imagine that is good for the stick.

there was some talk about how sticks may become brittle in the bitter cold.

One of the points that came up was that when a stick goes from one extreme (warm car) to another (cold rink) in a short period of time, it may have a detrimental effect. I'll see if I can dig up the thread.

That thread also links to this one (the link in the thread is inoperational):

Ive been playing inline at an outdoor rink for the last month. The weather has been in the 20s and some times the teens. Ive used an M2, Synergy II and Warrior Dolo. No problems with any of the sticks, or wheels for that matter. My wheels wear faster when its warmer out...

the cold makes the wheels more dense, so they act like harder wheels. Heat does the opposite.

Same goes for sticks- a colder stick will feel stiffer, and a warmer stick will feel whippier.

in my experience, if you use glue in the 2-peice setup the blade could get loose. no such problem with tape.

i didnt think this was true till about a week ago, when i left my stick in the cold car and the butt end came loose!

yeah i really don't know if weather has any effect on the crazy materials companies use to make stuff these days, but theres something about leaving my gear outside in the cold that makes me real iffy, i usually associate cold weather to brittle materials...and im talking cold, its been around the -20C or colder mark here in edmonton for the last little while, i always take my stuff inside
